BG still struggling to get wins in the close ones

Post by BGSU33 »

BG is now 5-16 in games decided by 7 points or less in the last five seasons, including 4-12 in the last four years under Clawson. And several of these close ones have come up in big games, like the Buffalo game in 2008 that would have sent us to the MAC Championship, the bowl game against Idaho in 2009 and this year's game against Kent State for a shot at the MAC East title. Now on the flip side, we've actually been having a decent year this season so most of our wins this year were by more than one score which has been good. But the fact still remains, when things get tight, we're still falling short more often than not. Here is BG's record in games decided by 7 points or less in the last five years:

2012: 0-1
2011: 1-3
2010: 1-4
2009: 2-4
2008: 1-4
GO BG!!!

On the bright side, we're winning games we're SUPPOSED to be winning, which is much better to see IMO.

The Buffalo game wasn't even the worst game of 2008. The only reason the season even hinged on that game was because we lost to two terrible Miami and EMU teams as well.

Edit: It's worth noting that almost half of those losses are probably due to a poor kicking game.

If you're a coaching staff (or evaluating one), this is not a stat you like to see.
