BG's MAC title drought hits 20 years

I stepped foot on campus as a freshman in 1993, right after BG had just come off of back-to-back MAC Championships, and I was very excited about about experiencing that as a student. Well those four years quickly came and went without one, and so has an additional 16 others years to follow. I really can't believe BG is in a 20-year drought when it comes to a MAC title in football. BG used to be synonymous with MAC championship caliber football, but the fact of the matter is, not anymore. And that's hard to believe when you think about all the great players over the years that we've had, some of the coaches, some very good teams, numerous wins over teams from BCS conferences and several years of national rankings. We just haven't been able to get over the hump when it comes to winning a conference title. I will say this, as disappointing as it is to fall short of one like this year, it was at least enjoyable to be in the race for one again late in the year. But man, after 20 years, to say I can't wait to experience a MAC title since becoming a Falcon would be a huge understatement.

BG is historically a top 5 MAC program with 10 titles. But this drought is one of the longest (if not the longest) we've seen in a while. It shouldn't have happened, but it has.

There are reasons to be optimistic, like the youth of the team, but there are troubling signs, too, such as the fact that the current coaching regime isn't winning the "big" games -- any of them. They lost a chance to win a bowl game their first year; they've lost to Toledo the past three seasons; and they couldn't pull out a win to get the East title at home with their best team so far.

Yes, the team is progressing and it is winning more...but there's still that doubt playing havoc that they can take the next step necessary.

But hey, at least it's not as bad as the men's basketball drought: they haven't been to the NCAA tournament since, I believe, 1968, and have won five regular season titles (and obviously no tournament titles) during the past 40 plus years.

I also believe BG is the only MAC team that hasn't gotten to the NCAA in men's basketball in the past 30 plus years.

That's more than pathetic...and it's been discussed a lot on here.

While I'm not "happy" about losing, it's nice to know we got beat by 2 great Kent and Toledo teams that both took out ranked teams during this season. If we're going to lose a championship run, I'd rather it be to teams that are actually respectable.

Basically, I'm glad the reason we lost our chance is not the 2008 Eastern Michigan, Miami, and Buffalo teams. (EMU and Miami went a combined 5-24 that season. 2 of those wins were against BG) That 2008 season was laid out for BG on a silver platter.
