2013 Roster

by Globetrotter
Was reading today that 14 guys are leaving after this year. I was surprised to see that these 4 were leaving with a year left of elegibility.

Scott Hodges 6-7 297 Jr®
Matt Oczypok 5-10 189 Jr®
Austin Collier 6-0 208 Jr®
Mark Mays 5-9 189 Jr®

Not a huge deal, and might actually be good for them and the program but I was surprised. Hodges might have started next year though. Not sure if he was a Sr or not as he is listed as a Jr(r) on the Roster and a Sr on the 2 deep.

Decided to mock up next years depth chart.
Questions at RT, DT and MLB.
I put the only tackle on the 2deep that returns at the RT spot.
I put Lynch at MLB (Not sure who filled in when Woods was out)
I put Both Ouelett and Colvin Starting although Campbell is there as well.

We only lose 3 starters. Roussus, Jones and Woods.
All 3 were very good but I expect we will be good again next year.

IMO, we'll be deeper on DL next year with Maynard and Campbell coming back. I really like Baird and Thomas at DE too. At LB, DJ Lynch will be promoted to Dwayne's spot and Martin will remain at Rover, whole secondary returns so no concerns there at all. I don't expect much of a defensive drop off at all.

You better move Knapke UP the list too!

I've not heard a thing about Malik Stokes recently. Is he projected to move to WR? Or is he a legit contender for 2014 QB? Regardless I hope he gets on the field soon. Very impressive athlete.

Maynard, Cambell, Oullet, Minns, Colvin is going to be a formidable DT rotation.

I really like Bryan Thomas and Charlie Walker on the edges. Baird will just keep getting better, he needs a good off season in the weight room.

It will be interesting to see if Kendall Montgomery moves to DE in the off season.

Martin, Lynch, and Swan as the linebackers, that's a really, really good group.

EVERY defensive back returns.

The defense was lights out this year. I know losing Chris Jones and Dwayne Woods will hurt. But, I think this group will be better next year.

If you were on a football team for 3/4 yrs. and hardly (if at all) hit the field in an actual game...would you stay? Hopefully, these guys will have their degrees, which still SHOULD be a primary reason for coming to college.

Unless you aren't given that opportunity because you've been in the program for four years and have been advised you aren't getting a fifth....not saying that's true in any of these cases, but that would be my guess.

That's a lot of QB depth. Would like to see Stokes get some time next year in a wildcat role but I don't think it will happen. Guessing Valdez will change positions. Hopefully Johnson and Knapke stick around; all of these guys have talent and it'd be really unfortunate if any of them left. I think it's inevitable, but we'll see.

Same with RB, although its easier to give everyone touches in our offense. Martin was pushing Pettigrew for time before he went down this year, so he'll be in the mix. I know Samuel is talented, but he's a little injury prone and I think you'll see even more balance in the carries to keep all of them fresh. Excited to see what Givens can bring - definitely showed his talent on that TD run.

Similar situation at WR. So much talent there. I think Coby gets on the field more next year and I'd like to see Stokes used better in the offense. It'll be interesting to see what they do at slot when Jackson gets healthy; I think he's naturally more talented than Burbrink but injuries have kept him off the field. Hosley and Greene will factor in as well. Mike Rodgers might even see the field if he doesn't redshirt.

Agree about Montgomery moving to DE. Lot of quality TE depth.

O-line looks solid next year, though losing Roussos will hurt. Dietz and Beggan will probably push for time, and it wouldn't surprise me to see us bring in a juco guy given the success we've had doing that.

D-line finally has the depth and it comes at the right time with Jones graduating. There's some interesting position battles there. I think Colvin moves back to end; they moved him inside because of injuries this year. Shaq Hall is an interesting guy.. came in very raw but is a heck of an athlete. I wonder if he'll push for time next year.

I think Woods will be the easiest loss to deal with and that's no knock on him. Lynch did a nice job filling in for him and will probably start. Croley is going to be an all-MAC guy eventually. Swan is unheralded. You all know what Martin can do. Brown impressed enough to serve as a backup this year. Lot of talent here.

Secondary, as someone mentioned, doesn't lose anything. You'll see some good position battles at CB too, though Hunter and Truss are both really good. Foster is another unheralded guy. Jude, Pettus, Gates, and Ward might be the deepest safety rotation in the MAC next year. I think Redding stays at WR but I haven't seen much of his defensive film.

Think there will be a battle between Tate and Farinella for FGs.

Overall: next year's team will be the deepest since our early 2000 teams and has the potential to be really special. Its hard to knock on Schilz after the year we had, but to take the next step we have to have better production at QB. There's simply too many weapons now that our defense shouldn't have to bail us out as much as they did this year. I don't think Clawson goes anywhere this offseason; there are other guys in the MAC who will get picked ahead of him (Hazell, Doeren). On the other hand, the conference is on the upswing, and the new rule allowing the MAC to potentially get an automatic BCS bid is gonna make it a lot tougher for these bigger programs to snatch up MAC coaches like in the past. Looking at the schedule next year, Tulsa is going to be a tough out. Indiana is on the upswing and playing against Dan Mullen will be fun. That being said, we should be in all of those games and have a very good chance at 10 wins.

Walkons that might achieve schollies.

- Ryan Burbrink is a shoe in for one. Started most games. Reminds me of Cole Magner or Corey Partridge.
- Taylor Royster has a good shot at one. Played quite a bit and received praise from Clawson several times. I'd like to see what he can do with another 15-20 pounds on him. 5-9 and 252 but he is only a redshirt freshman.
- Spencer Cairo has a shot. Didn't play much but was on the 2-deep for quite a while. Can play center or guard.

We should be a rock on defense next year with all that experience everywhere and the offense has no excuse to be much much better. Going to be an exciting next 12 months.

I hope you are right. I think we might be underestimating just how good Chris Jones is and how that trickles down to other areas as he is double teamed and what not.
