Will BCS bowl money be split among the MAC teams??

Post by Falco_peregrinusana »

Question for all who know more than me... If Kent does go to the Orange Bowl and rakes in the ten kagillion dollars, and that's a big if, does that money get split and distributed to the other MAC schools??

Heard on the radio the other day this senerio, problem they said would be Kent or NOrthern not being able to fullfill their ticket obligations and the money coming out of their share of the BCS money which would hurt ALL MAC schools.

It is true that, typically, bowl appearances come with obligations to sell tickets. Without these obligations, the bowl games would not be able to stay afloat. And, with most of the bowls the MAC is associated with, this obligation usually lowers the size of the payout.

But the BCS bowl games have so many other sources of revenue associated with them -- including genuinely lucrative television contracts and big walk up crowds -- that any ticket obligation would probably be a small piece of the puzzle. If Kent State makes it to the Orange Bowl, this is a big, big windfall for the whole league.

I'll stand corrected, but I think that radio chatter may have been somewhat misinformed.

Here's a good column from SI on the Kent BCS situation:

I believe that if a non-AQ team, such as Kent State, were to make a BCS bowl game that the money is split amongst ALL non-AQ schools, not just the participating team's conference.

Still a nice chunk of change.

I have a feeling that they find a way to get Oklahoma in and Kent/NIU or Boise out.

I also think that the money is split by all Non-AQ's but I think I learned that from Hammb.

I've done a lot of research on this over the years and the only real answer is that it's very difficult to find all of the details of BCS disbursement.

What I have gathered is that the BCS guarantees a small sum (around $8-9 million I think) that gets disbursed among all the non-BCS conference teams if none of them make it to one of those bowl games.

If a non-BCS team does go to a bowl game that share gets bumped up to the $28 million or so. It's tough to say exactly how that money is divided but the best info I could find makes it sound like about half of that BCS share will go to the other non BCS conferences and the other half will go to the MAC. The MAC can disburse the funds how they wish, but I would imagine that KSU would get a bigger chunk of that total with the rest getting split among the other schools.

The numbers are really tough to figure out because there doesn't seem to be a lot published and the BCS shares fluctuate based on TV/Ticket/Ad revenue. Not sure how KSU failing to meet ticket requirements would meet it, but I don't think it'd be a huge chunk out of it. I think at the end of the day you're probably talking about a half million bucks to each of the MAC schools if KSU makes it. So yeah, we should be rooting for KSU...that money could probably buy out Orr's contract and get us a real basketball coach.

There is an outside chance NIU gets in should they win. Boise St too. Either way I think we share in the money.

BCS rank
13 Florida St v FSU
14 Clemson
15 Oregon St v Nicholls St
16 UCLA v Stanford
17 Kent v N Illinios
18 Texas v Kansas St
19 Michigan
20 Boise St v Nevada
21 NIU v Kent

IIRC you are correct. However, a larger chunk of change goes to the conference from which the BCS buster came, and then a smaller chuck of change goes to all the other conferences. This is because the MAC and its competitive level is the reason Kent is ranked as high as it is as a 11-1 team. If Kent finished 11-1 but played Troy, MTSU, ULL, etc from the Sun Belt, for example, it may not get ranked as high as #16 or higher in the BCS standings because that would be an easier schedule. It's a way of telling all of the conference that you were such a good conference that the best of you is good enough to be considered on par with, say, Florida, Oregon, or anyone else who gets an at large BCS bid.

After that performance last night, Nebraska should fall a LONG way. NIU needs to leap frog Michigan.

They Shouldn't have to. Michigan should be #15 and all NIU needs to do is get to 16. NIU needs to leapfrog Boise. FSU should be 12, Clemson, 13, Oregon St 14 then?
