Post by Falcon Commander »

Any Season Ticket Holders (FB) planning to attend the National Signing Day Reception, at the Clazel Theater in BG this Wednesday??

(see how many of those FL kids sign and if there are any surprises??)

See you there. :drinkers:

I'm going! Just another great perk of being a Football Season Ticket Holder. I'm always impressed by the way the athletic department treats us. They really try to make us a part of the program and extend their appreciation for our support. 1st class in my opinion!

What is Sighing Day??? Is that when we all get together and exhale one big breath for picking up a two star recruit?

GM, I hope your comment is just "mildly sarcastic" [-X ....this was a great show last year. Freak and I went together, had a great opportunity to talk with ALL the coaches during the evening.. (even had a chance to "chastize" them a bit for a lack of NE Ohio kids on the roster)....but there was some outstanding footage of the kids, especially a RB film that blew most people away... Yes, the "majority" of these kids might be listed as 2 stars, but a lot of those 2 star kids have played a lot and well for us in the past... supposedly, we have EIGHT 3 star kids this year, and possibly more if I were to tally all ratings by the 4 recruiting sites. Our class is generally rated as #2 in the MAC behind the "school up north".... My son is taking us to a Cavs game that nite, or I might be heading back up to see this year's program. \:D/

If you care to do the homework, I would bet there is one or more of those 2 (**) star recruits on the Colts roster. :?

Stars mean very little IMO. It is so hard to assign a rating to a kid when he's 17 and expect it to hold true four years later. Case in point. We brought on a 4 star punter, top nationwide, and he fizzled out largely due to attitude and work ethic. A year before we bring on a 2 star mobile quarterback that moves to receiver and sets all kinds of school records, conference records, and an NCAA record while carrying an incredible attitude, work ethic, and aura of leadership.
You can assign a star based off some HS highlight films of players making freakishly awesome plays against competition that will never play a snap of college ball, but you cannot project with any accuracy how the player will grow and mature in camp, how he will handle adversity when playing against other players of similar talent levels, how he will handle learning from a whole new set of coaches and on a whole new roster. In my opinion, basing a recruiting class off of just stars is treating incoming athletes like digital players in NCAA Football 2013.

Yeah...that punter may not be the best example. Rojas left here and went to KU in the big 12 and averaged over 40yds per punt each and every year. They were really happy with him.

OK, everyone take a deep breath and look closely at the title of this thread.

GMartin was making a joke about SIGHING day, not disparaging SIGNING day or the quality of our recruits. Hence, the subsequent face to the palm by Pete S.

Speaking of stars....247 sports now has us back on top in the MAC rankings as they have assigned a high *** grade to DT Shannon Smith (he was previously unrated).

Hahaha I didn't even notice! Just wanted to make a point about how I think the recruiting services and media attention have made people think recruiting is all about star ratings instead of about a 17 / 18 year old deciding which university, which team, which coaches he will work with best.

Ratings may not be everything but they are definitely still important.

I don't pay much attention to stars, but I look at what other schools offered the player. That's a better indication, IMO. If it's BG and Eastern Michigan, not so impressed. If it's BG, Louisville, Rutgers and Illinois then I'm impressed.

I will say,though, I'd rather have a 4 star recruit than a 2 star recruit.
