I have been waiting for a moment like this since last year. You fellas will have to wait in line. I plan on calling right at 3 p.m. and I have a lot to say. It could take a while.

The #1 concern is upgrading production in the passing game, increasing efficiency and generating more big plays. Clawson even said he knows we won't take the next step until this happens.
My question is how?

In regards to the passing game, ALL the WRs return this year. A few got hurt for most of the 2012 season and it showed. We basically had 3 WR's for most of the year...Gallon, Joplin and Burbrink. Bayer had a nice year and I see him having a huge SR yr. Stokes didn't pan out nearly as well as I hoped he would. Schilz also needs to have a season like his SO year (If he wins the job again. Coach made it very clear the QB race was wide open). 80% of the OL returns which is always a major plus.

I think I can safely say Schilz responds well to competition. He had to earn his job in 2010 and it was a fierce competition. When you take into consideration the absolute lack of running game, losing some top receivers, and on offensive line that could barely keep him standing up at times, I'd say Schilz did pretty darn well in 2010, or at least did pretty darn well with a bad situation. He was basically the offense.
Nobody was happy with 2010 and every position was up for competition. He won another fierce competition and it showed. The jump Schilz took from 2010 to 2011, statistically and in game management, was remarkable. He torched Wyoming, Idaho, and Buffalo among others. The Wyoming loss was on a lot of factors but Schilz was not one of them. That last minute 90 yard no TO drive was pretty incredible by any standards. I'm not sure Omar Jacobs or Josh Harris could have pulled that one off.
2012, he really didn't have competition. He didn't have to win his job as it was just given to him. At times he was very good. He effectively managed the offense but he didn't make the big plays that he was making in 2011 and even some in 2010. I'd say he took a step forward in leadership but a step back in terms of big plays. That doesn't mean he was bad in 2012. He lit up Kent State and I thought for sure we were going to pull off that win and he'd be MVP.
2013, it's clear he's got competition. My full expectation is he will respond to it, win, and have his best season and leave BG as one of the all time best passers but also leave with some great backups ready to take over and continue the wins. I sure hope so ...

When Schilz signed he was basically handed the keys to the car, Pagel and Pankratz were terrible. Got his redshirt year out of the year watching Sheehan and then Clawson knowing it was going to be a complete rebuild went with his freshman QB trying to get him experience. Which paid off in 2011. He was good in 2011.
2012 he was meh. His receivers were young and new but he had a much better oline and running game than his first 2 years. He just didn't improve very much last year.
It's going to be his job in 2013, unless Knapke comes out and his unbelievable this spring and summer. It would be shocking to sit a 3 year starter for a redshirt freshman. I don't see Johnson as much of a threat to win the starting job, I don't think he's very good.
He will be better this year because his receivers are going to better. His decision making has to get better, his turnovers are killer. 3 INTs against both Kent and Buffalo to end the regular season and then a huge fumble in the Military Bowl. He was very serviceable in games he wasn't asked to win, 2nd half of Akron, OU, EMU, URI, Idaho. Miami he played well in tough conditions. He threw for 355 against Kent, but only completed 50% of his passes and threw 3 picks. He was a game manager last year and it was good enough for 8 wins. He needs to be good in the big games this year. He needs to have 250+ yard, 3 TD, 1 INT type games against Toledo, Indiana, Tulsa, Ohio, etc. for this team to win 10+ games.
