Hats off to Brandon

Brandon took a lot of heat after our last game so its only fair to give him his due, at least I think so. We came out and got the job done. The PJ Pope TD pass was a prime example of outcoaching. GB did a nice job tonight. This smelled like a toldeo revisit for a short time, but we played well almost all game long. We put up an awesome half of offense and followed it up with a great 2nd half of defense. I could careless what anyone else says, I want this guy around as long as possible. Can't wait for 05

This was an example/reslut of good play calling, good plays by the players, and of learning from past experiences. The culmination of these three things puts BG squarely on the same page heading out of the season. Hopefully we pick up right where we left off next yr. can i get an AMEN?

I dont think that i have come to expect anything less than that from Brandon but tonight he did make some great calls. I really like him being risky and going for the onside kick. I really hope we can keep him around.

That was a great call for the onside-- I even think I would have been saying that if we didn't recover. ::Grin:: In a game that was billed as a shootout, getting that leg up early was key....worst case scenario would have been yeilding a touchdown and then you're just back to 0-0.

Unexpected onside kick:
I was still celebrating the touchdown at the bar and missed it. ( Ahh, Instant Replay)

A solid game overall by the guys and this staff deserves credit for at least meeting the intensity of the opponent, something that hadn't been done to that point against solid competition save Marshall.
Tim Beckman still has done nothing this year to impress me and our defensive scheme needs major work and re-evaluation.
Brandon did make a few great calls, but I think it was a combo of losing DeAngelo and not having a defense that costs the Tigers more than our "brilliant" playcalling. The onside kick and a the deep balls were major keys to victory so credit where it's due, but Cole Magner punting?? I've never been a Nate Fry fan, but if you as a staff aren't sold on him, isn't that why we have a men's soccer program?

I don't understand the Cole punting. But the onside kick was great. It did feel like Toledo for a while, but they turned it around.
Certainly, Memphis made mistakes, and certainly losing Williams hurt. But we made some plays on D in the second half, and started to get pressure on Wimprine, which caused some problems. I think the D did step up their play--unlike the NIU and UT games.

I really thought Suisham muffed the kick, because of the way he rushed like mad at the ball after he kicked it. That and the way he kicked it looked like he just didn't hit it squarely.
I was like "OH SHI"
and then the announcers were like "An onside kick!"
and I was like "WHOA"

The coaching staff did a pretty good job last night. The PJ Pope TD reception was the play I was waiting for most of the night. The way they were jailbreak blitzing, you just knew that play was going to open up soon.
As much as I don't like our defensive scheme Memphis' is just insane. They admit that they have a group of overmatched DBs, and then they put them out on islands all night/season? WHY!? The 3-3-5 is a terrible scheme in general, IMO, and you better have some DB talent to back it up.
Great calls by our staff would include:
Going to the running game when Omar was getting rattled. They couldn't stop Pope, they did a good job going back to him when we needed to.
The Onsides Kick. Great in a shootout. With our defense you figure they were gonna score anyway. May as well say screw field position and try to get the ball

Probably saw something on film that the players were bailing early too. Good call.
Pope's TD catch. That route was coming open when they were blitzing. Great call, pass, and catch.
We showed up to play in BOTH halves!
Good stuff, overall. I still have a few complaints, but it was a better coached game than we've seen for the past 2 years.
The biggest thing that was another, WTH!?, moment is the Cole punting. I'm sorry, but that is just STUPID. There is no reason for that whatsoever. Bring your punter out there and punt. If you're going to go for it, bring the offense out. You don't think that the opponent is thinking fake when you have a WR punting? I just don't get that call.
I'm not a big fan of having Omar roll to his opposite side so much either. You're putting him in a position to make the most difficult throw a QB can make. Yes, he's usually quite good at it, but you're asking too much. You could just see that pick coming a mile away.
But, all in all, it was a pretty well coached game. Oh yeah, good discipline too, with very few penalties by both teams!

I can't see how anyone can be negative about this staff after this game. Sure the defense gave up some yards and points in the first half but they kicked the Tigers O around all second half. For crying out loud, we just rolled over a solid team in a bowl and there are still comments against the staff....I am tired of that. We held Memphis to 90 total yards rushing....I know Williams left the game but that's football. GIVE THE CREDIT WHEN DUE!!!
Brandon is 20-6, with 2 straight bowl wins. 'Nuff said.
Next year, we win it all.
BTW, anyone else get totally annoyed with Bob Davie and his lovefest for Urban Meyer????

The guy hasn't been here since 2002 and yet he still wants to give all the credit to Meyer. F that. Meyer came in and turned the program around...and I'll always be grateful for that. But it is BRANDON that has gotten BG to where it is today, not Meyer. I know some will disagree with me but I'll take Gregg Brandon over Urban Meyer any day of the week.....ANY day. Meyer may be a more intense coach but Brandon tells ya like it is....honesty.
Only 7 weeks until national signing day and 4 months til the spring game. The 2005 season cannot get here soon enough!!! Good thing the hoops teams and hockey team are doing well...
ONWARD FALCONS!!!!

And here I thought I was actually complimenting our staff. They should take what they got from me, they've got a long way to go before they're getting much more love than that.

Well that's your opinion hammb and that's ok. How much love do ya give Tressel and the boys? :wink
9-3, bowl champs and another season of Top 25 rankings...I guess they must go 11-0 before the love flows? OK, NIU and UT were all tough road games. NOBODY on this site thought BG would go undefeated. I predicted a 9-2 record and some folks said that was crazy after losing J5. No doubt that the staff blew the game at UT.
Hey, we can disagree....that's ok.
GO FALCONS!!!

Yep, we're all entitled our opinion.
As for Tressel and the Boys...ugh. I don't know what he's doing down there with that program. I thought at the very least they'd be clean under Tressel. Boy did he have the wool pulled over our collective eyes...
9-3 with a bowl win actaully surpassed my expectations this year, but I didn't know that Omar was going to be better than Harris right off the bat. Had you told me Omar would set the record for TD:INT ratio, I would find 9-3 fairly disappointing, and do.
I'll give them their props for last night. That was probably the best coached game we've had in Brandon's 2 years here. Hopefully that continues.
I'll give them their props when they start winning those tough road games. As it is they are excelling at the most important part of coaching, and that is recruiting. If they continue to bring in these sorts of recruits then I think we can continue to win 8+ games a year. My problem is that I see a whole lotta John Cooper in the way these past couple years have gone. I'll be convinced of this staff when we start winning those tough road games. I'll give 'em props for holding home field, which we do, and bringing in top tier recruits by MAC standards, which we do. But I'm greedy
Over the past 2 years look at the games that I would consider legit opponents. Purdue, OSU, NIU, Miami x 2, UT, NW. This year we had OU, NIU, UT, Memphis, Marshall. The rest of the wins are nice, but the way we're recruiting you could have a monkey coach us to victory against the rest of our competition. Credit to them for recruiting so well, but recruiting doesn't make you a great game-day coach or motivator.
In those games 6-6. Only 1 of those wins was on the road. That puts us at 1-5 on the road against good competition. I realize road games are tough, but that record isn't very good. I think the reason it really sticks in my craw is taht I generally think we are more talented than the teams we're losing to (OSU & Miami the exceptions). The problem is that in some big games we either come out totally flat in one of the 2 halves, or we change our scheme drastically for some reason.
I don't know why I let it get to me, but I guess I just crave perfection

I'm glad we have Gregg Brandon coaching here. We are going to be a very interesting team next year

I know this was not technically a road game but it seemed like it watching on TV. Memphis had a ton more fans than we did. It was nice to see our team keep its compusure in the late third and fourth quarter.
