I will admit I have grown less and less of a fan of him over the past decade but that is a pretty cool article.

I won't give him grief today. That was a killer article.

He's still a snake but he put BG football back on the map and he's a great ambassador for the school and city. Its always nice to remind bandwagon OSU fans where their coach came from.

The least he could do is help with fundraisers. We gave a wide receivers coach from a running program a chance to be a head coach and launched his entire career. He mislead people about his intentions but he's done that almost everywhere so we shouldn't feel uniquely wronged in that regard.

The Holtz line disparaging both himself and BG is his standard opening on the banquet circuit and gets less funny every time it's told. He recently told the Big 10 network that his first assitants at BG made $25,000 and never questioned anything he did because it was "their first job," repeating the pattern of negatively exaggerating the conditions under which he worked here. (The pay was low back then but not 25K a year low. The assistants were young but all had prior college coaching experience and Brandon even came from Colorado) He characterizes his time here as some type of ordeal to be endured before he left us rubes for the bright lights of the big city, throwing us a token backhanded compliment about the friendliness of the town every now and again. Ohio State can have him.

Great article. That's exactly the Urban Meyer I heard talk here in Cleveland right after he was named coach.

I still don't understand the "little man's disease" some people here have towards him. He did some great things at BG and moved on for a bigger and better opportunity. Can't fault him for that.

Does anyone know what Toledo is getting for their trip to Florida this year. We received $1,250,000 last year. I figured 1.25 million was a tad high so maybe Urbie had a hand in it. But if Toledo gets the same or more, that thought bubble pops.

Urban Meyer is without a doubt my favorite college football coach ever. What he did to that group of BG players was simply astounding. I knew quite a few of the guys and the way those teams were would never be conducive to winning football games. He came in and got results. They either bought in or they were gone.

Prior to arriving at OSU I always rooted for him where ever he was coaching. At OSU it's tough, I just find it so difficult to root for them anymore, but I'll be damned if I don't still love watching an Urban Meyer coached team. As far as I'm concerned the 2 years he coached here, and the couple years of residual greatness that lasted after he left, have been by far the most fun I've ever had as a Falcon fan. I wish Brandon could have sustained it, and I hope Clawson can regain it, but that was one helluva ride. I can honestly say that for 2 years the BG Falcons had one of the top 2-3 coaches in all of college football at the helm.

Don't quote me 100% but I read somewhere they are gettin $975,000.

Urban may have thought about us, but they paid us more because they need the opponent in order to fill their slate of eight home games and nothing out of Florida until November.

I have no doubt he is a great coach. He may be a great man and father. But he will ALWAYS be the guy who grabbed the next opportunity (nothing wrong with that) in the worst professional way possible. I respect his abilities but will never take him at his word. The ill feelings I once had are gone for the most part.

How was what he did really the worst professional way?

These guys aren't able to say that they're interviewing for a new job. They can't let it be known that they've got other job offers.

Every coach that leaves does so under secrecy and leaves behind a web of lies. It's the culture of the position. If they admit that they are looking for other opportunities they'd be vilified in the media. If they admit to looking elsewhere and then don't leave they risk losing the trust of their team. If they lie to keep everything hidden then up and leave they get vilified for lying. It's really a no win situation for these guys.

I was as pissed off as anyone when I found out he was leaving. But I've since realized he really didn't have much choice. I can't fault anyone for taking a better career opportunity, and unfortunately the way athletics are nowadays you really cannot expect any more than what Urban gave. For 2 years he live, breathed, and slept BG football. He put the program on the map and set them up for a very successful run. He then moved on to a better opportunity. I can't fault him for that in the least, regardless of what he said while he was in the process of negotiating with Utah.

The thing about Urban is that he didn't just stay mum or give a pro forma "I'm staying" assurance for the sake of team trust and recruits. He went out of his way in a highly public fashion (a Jack Carle article a few days before) to reiterate that he's staying for the long term or at the very least until a championship was achieved. Fans were realistic enough to know that is was only a matter of time before someone was going to offer him more money and make it virtually impossible to stay. We were just shocked (and still are) at getting lied to and deceived in such a cold and cunning manner.

Contrast this approach to Dave Doeren at NIU last year and his comments before they even qualified for the MAC championship game:

"I really have enjoyed the process at NIU and they gave me my first chance to be a head coach. So I'm going to do everything I can to make this the best school that I can make it. If something comes along that I know if better for me and my family, I'm going to have to listen to it."

I guess in my old age I just don't see a large disparity between the two approaches. In both cases everybody knows the guy is too good for the paycheck he's currently earning, and everybody knows that when a much bigger/better offer comes along they're gone. So long as the commitment was there while still employed by us (and nobody can ever doubt that, IMO), I have no reason to hate on the guy.

He came, he changed our culture for the better, he left for a better offer. To my knowledge he's never had anything but good to say about BG since he left. If I were gonna be mad about him for anything in the whole fiasco it's that I wish he woulda taken Brandon with him!
