Great WIN...but still have questions

Post by slashba33 »

Last night was so satisfying to see us beat down a team like Tulsa and do it in by punching them in the mouth!! Also, I would lie if I said I wasn't smiling that Clawson pulled Schilz and played Johnson and it was successful!! :-D

After the game, we ran into Jamel Martin (#37 RB) and I asked him if he was hurt or something as to why he didn't get on the field. He shook his head and smiled and said "I don't know man...I don't know." Also, I noticed Givens and Hopgood did not get on the field either!! The move pulling Schilz was justified, but not playing the most experienced RBs in the home opener for 1 snap left me a little concerned. Does anyone have any insight or knowledge to why these guys didn't see any action last night? My concern is for the long-term mindset of the team and keeping everyone together with winning in mind. A couple of pissed off upper classmen start getting into ears of others and then you have lost the team.

With a start like this, I don't want anything to get in our way!!

I think that is the problem with having 5-6 talented RBs. You just can't give everyone the reps they probably deserve. I just hope they aren't too discouraged. I can't think of a season where we didn't have 2-3 injuries at RB. It is going to happen.

Hopgood must be hurt. He wasn't even in pads on the sideline. Didn't see givens.

I thought Hopgood blew up a guy on a punt return? Agree with the webboy...how many RB's got carries last year? It's tough to argue with the results we saw last night out of Greene, Houston and Coppet.

So far as the QB situation goes...if Johnson doesn't show more passing downfield, he'll be less effective as the season wears on. It's tough to move the ball consistently if you're only forcing the defense to cover the first 10-15 yards off the ball
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

I think something being lost here is that Tulsa is still a damn good team. Most teams we see in the MAC won't be that good and Johnson will improve. We just beat a perennial 10 win team that was nearly unanimously picked to win Conference USA and might still do so.

Sorry, but Tulsa is NOT a "damn good" football team. They are not even a "good" football team. We'll see several MAC teams this season that will give us more trouble than they did last night. Pre-season rankings mean nothing, and most are based on prior year accomplishments. They only had one 2012 returning starter on defense from last night.

We have far, far more answers than questions.

Now is the time to root for Tulsa to help our strength of schedule. Their defense will improve and their offense will not see anything remotely resembling our defense in C-USA.

Best team we have beaten in several years IMO. We made them look bad offensively with what 8 returning starters on offense. This team pretty much mopped the floor with us every time we played. They didn't fall off the face of the earth in one game. They will win plenty of games.

Biggest name we've beaten in several years...not best team IMO.

Outside of Ohio U last year, what good teams have we beat in the Clawson era? I can't think of any. Can't say for sure as it is fuzzy but it seems like his 09 team got to 7 wins by beating bad teams.

Other than Toledo in 2001...Urbie didn't beat anyone good either. Gregg Brandon had a history of big wins against good teams. Unfortunately, he also had home losses to teams like Miami and EMU....

Of course Brandon did it with Urbie's recruits!

Urban beat Kansas and Missouri. I'd say those are pretty huge.
