To the Editor: Fan wants more cheering at games

I have been going to BGSU football games for a long time.
I make a lot of noise when the other team has the ball but what do the rest of the fans do? They keep quiet.
It makes me wonder if they are fans of the other team.
I have tried to get them to make noise when the other team has the ball but it didn't work.
I like to see all the fans at the games, but if they don't want to cheer then they might as well stay home.

I cheer when I go to games. I make noise when the other team has a key 3rd down to try to convert, etc. I know the sport fairly well and try to help the team out when it is appropriate.
But I will absolutely NOT tell people how to act at a game. Everybody may be a fan in whatever manner they choose. And I sure as hell wouldn't tell people to not come to the games...that's ridiculous.
And further, if there is one thing we DON'T need more of, it's fans like SnakeMan. He's the closest thing we've got to a douchey OSU fan...not to mention an alcoholic and a danger to anybody unlucky enough to find themselves driving on the same street as him late at night. Unless he's changed a lot since my last encounter with him he can go pound salt. I'd rather HE stay home than the hundreds or thousands of people he's alienating.
Exactly...I've gone to games at Michigan not involving BG and I always wear the orange and black...I would tell anyone giving me grief to pound it. I don't care if you wear a Woody Hayes costume to our games...
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Unbelievable. This guy is asking fans to be more vocal and create an atmosphere at the games that provides us more of a home field advantage and some of you are resorting to bashing the guy? He has a point. Our fans don't get into the games at all. It is rather frustrating sometimes as well. People don't have to take it to the "douchey" level to make noise and actually seem like they care about the game. Why is he out of line for asking for more vocal support? Because some of you have personal issues with him? Ever been to a game at Tulsa, Troy, or Boise? I have, and those were some game atmospheres that make college football fun. Their fans can get into games, why can't ours?

I think the issue was with the statement that people should just stay home if they don't want to be vocal. If we had sellout crowds full of silent fans, I would agree, because the silent fans would be replaced by vocal fans. However, since we haven't sold out in...forever...telling people to stay home will just lead to an empty stadium.
The only problems I have with the silent fans are the ones that complain because I cheer or because I stand up to celebrate a touchdown. Those are the fans that grind my gears, and those are the ones that probably should stay home.

Easy, lots of cheap tickets or tickets are given away to people in the town who aren't necessarily BG fans, but just want to take in a college football game. The crowd we had at Kent on Saturday was vocal, rowdy and on their feet after every big play. Those are the real fans who want to travel on road games and support the school. I think we could use some engaging music or scoreboard graphics too to help the crowd get into it more, but I think much of it stems from the fact that the people who aren't standing up and being vocal likely have no emotional ties to the university.

I hear ya loud and clear. That's one of the reasons I moved 20 rows up last year. I got tired of hearing people behind me say "Down in front" or something to that nature. Now I'm 5 rows from the top and nobody says a word. For the love of Doyt Perry, its a FOOTBALL GAME> I love yelling and getting jacked up.
