Some stats on UMass...

They are averaging 7 pts a game while allowing 32. The offense is averaging 258 yard a game, including 96 on the ground and 162 thru the air. UMass has played a very difficult slate so far against Wisconsin, Kansas State and Vanderbilt. However, they did lose by 10 to Maine as well.

We need to come out and just take care of business....give them no hope from the opening kickoff.

Josh has a CC Meet in Medina at 11:30 so we may not to get BG until 2 or 2:30. His coach may sit him this week so we'll see.

GO FALCONS!!!! ROLL UMASS!!!!

BG needs to come out ready to play and give a 60-minute effort. Homecoming game, and a chance to go 3-0 in the MAC with the following two weeks being out of conference and a bye, some separation from the pack would be huge.

Ordinarily I would agree with such a post, but we gave a 35-minute effort against Akron and still beat the Zips by 17. And UMass is BAD, worse than Akron. We could probably give a 15-minute or 20-minute effort and still win.

Not that I'm suggesting we should wait until the 4th quarter to start playing, but this is basically the Murray State game over again disguised as a MAC game.

I see your point, however the team can't simply rely on playing half-assed every week and expect the coaching staff to bail them out. Won't happen against Toledo or Ohio.

Oh I definitely agree with that. Against Toledo or Ohio, playing that first half against Akron like we did we probably would have been down 3 touchdowns at half instead of being down by 4 points. You likely don't come back from that no matter how well the 2nd half goes.

They need to come out ready to play the first drive. Would be nice to sit some starters the last 25 minutes. I don't think any game is a gimmie when you can't get it done in the first half.

UMass gave Vanderbilt a battle. The Minutemen were only down 7-0 well into the second half. I wouldn't give them too many points.

I've been a fan of everything BG a long time and I never take any opponent for granted. A confident fan base seems to invite a bed shitting. Hell, even during the 91 and 92 seasons, I was anticipating a loss on any Saturday (Friday for the Vegas Bowl).

Our history is littered with unfathomable losses.

I'm fairly certain that BG would beat Vanderbilt. They aren't good. The only obstacle for us would be getting over the mental hurdle of playing a team from the BCS. If the game was in BG instead of Nashville the game probably wouldn't even be close. We have better coaching, and honestly I think our talent level is equal if not better than Vandy. We'll get a better read on that after our game in Starkville, but that is my suspicion.

First with Akron, and now with Massachusetts, I think people here are starting to give too much credit to our opponents. Virtually everybody here said very complementary things about Akron, and said that it was a good win for us. That's fine I guess, but the fact of the matter is that Akron hasn't beaten a I-A opponent in over 2 seasons and was 1-11 last season. They're bad. They're a team that we should have beaten soundly, and we did. Them getting so much praise on here the last few days, it's almost like they are the little brother that always gets picked on and we feel sorry for them. But I digress. Massachusetts is even worse than Akron is because unlike the Zips they have a loss to I-AA Maine already. They've been blown out in all their games. This team we're about to face on Saturday is one of the worst in all of I-A, maybe in all of college football to be honest. The talent disparity between us and them is about as wide as the Grand Canyon. This is not opinion, this is strictly fact based on the performance of these teams not just this season, but in prior years as well.

Now to RUIT's point, has BG lost games they shouldn't have over the years? Hell yes. We had some tough defeats in 2005, such of which were injury induced. 2006 and 2011 we just couldn't seem to win the close ones. But what sticks out most in my mind, we had some real implosions in 2008 against Miami and Eastern Michigan that upended our season. EMU was one of the worst teams in college football that year and they beat us 24-21 (which I believe is the only time EMU has beaten BG in the last 10 meetings plus). That was a really bad day. But if that was a 9 of 10 on the bedwetting scale, losing to Massachusetts would be an emphatic 10. It would be an all-timer that would probably make national headlines like our 2006 defeat to Temple did.

From a statistical standpoint...I believe that Massachusetts has about as much of a chance at beating Bowling Green Saturday as I do of winning the Pick 3 today. Bedwetting was more of a Brandon era tradition at BG. We haven't engaged in such recklessness under Clawson and I don't expect that to happen now.

Our performance against Indiana and general track record against BCS teams makes me seriously doubt that 24.

Before the Indiana games folks around here were acting like that would be an easy win too. I in no way expect to lose but penciling in a win here is a little crazy IMO. BG is a good team, not a great team.

I don't know about Vandy but I agree whole-heartedly about this UMASS game.

BG should come out and beat the living tar out of them because they are, without a doubt, one of the bottom 5 teams in 1A football. We should impose our will on them in the first half then just toy with them in the 2nd. That's what good teams do when they play over matched competition and it's what I expect this Saturday.

Anything less than a 2 TD victory is a big disappointment this weekend.

And if they do beat us I will not be giving credit to our opponent or any of that. I will simply say that our players/coaches should be embarrassed to lose. No point in polishing a turd, and if we manage to lose to UMASS that game would be quite the turd.

Our tendency under Clawson (with the exception of the Ohio game last year) is to win the games when we're favored and lose the games where we're the underdog or it's roughly even. 2013 is all about maintaining the former and changing the latter.

That's about how I feel about this one. Put it away early.

BG opened as a 23 pt favorite...line is now 25 1/2. We *should* beat UMass like a drum. The Falcons need to be focused from the opening kick and take care of biz.

Only 3 more days til we get to the Doyt again! Mrs. Freak, Jake and I should be rolling into BG by 10 at the latest. Yeah, the Mrs. will make it to a game this year. :) CRUSH UMASS!!!
