Very nice. Didn't know a lot of the background. I expect a much bigger payday ahead in a Conference USA type school, and I won't complain even if we don't win the MACC. He's done good. Would love to see us pay him to stay, but very doubtful.

Not so sure that a Conf. USA deal would be the kind of switch he'd want...IF he wants to leave at all....but then, I didn't think that Utah was that much above us about 12 yrs. ago either.

I don't think Clawson would leave for a CUSA job, either. It's going to be interesting how coaches view moving up now. UConn seems like a perfect fit for him with his ties to the northeast. Or does he hold out at BG until he can get a mega payday from a Big10 or ACC school?

Either way, he's come in and built the program the right way and put it on a solid foundation for a long time. If he is gone after this year, there is going to be a lot of people wanting this job. There is enough talent throughout the program to expect competing for division and MAC titles for years to come.

During the second year when things were really rough, he kept stressing to those who would listen that he was going "to build the team for the future and not right now." He was going to do things the right way - ie. Not pull redshirts off guys that were not on the two-deep their freshmen year by a certain game.

It was a slow process and sometimes a little painful, but its paid off.

I think the patience and resolve displayed by Clawson might work to our advantage. If someone else hires him they're going to pay him a lot of money and expect big things in exchange for it.

We were willing to endure 2-10 and 5-7 before signs of competiveness emerged after recruiting classes were signed and the talent was upgraded. Those were ugly years that can't be erased and mar his resume in spite of the ultimate payoff (which is still yet to come BTW). Someone made the excellent point in another thread about other schools being unwilling to demonstrate that kind of patience in today's climate. An AD might think "Dave can do it in 5 years, but I might be gone by then and so-and-so hot assistant is telling me he can do it in 2."

If he goes anywhere it probably won't be a total reclamation project like UConn but instead a place where he can win faster.

I think any school that hasn't had success in the past 5-10 years would and should hire him. A school like UConn that hasn't really done anything with football...I could see the AD making the case that 2-3 years of patience to build the thing correctly pales in comparison to many more years of futility that would likely come from chasing quick success
