It's getting to be bowl season again....
Just a question for all of you junkies who know more about college football than I do... Are there any other college teams, other than Penn State, that are banned from bowl participation this year??

That was posted before Tuesday nights games. I would imagine we would replace Ohio. Not that any of this matters at this point.Lord_Byron wrote:Right now, Mandel's got us on the outside looking in.

Re: It's getting to be bowl season again....
After the Toledo loss, we fell out of a lot of the bowl projections by many places across the board for two reasons. One, as of right now, there aren't as many conferences "projected" to not be able to fill their bowl slots which trickle down to conferences such as the MAC, essentially meaning, less spots for the MAC. Right now with several weeks to go, there are already about 50 teams bowl eligible for the 70 spots. And two, our pecking order in the MAC is behind teams like NIU, BSU, UB and UT and we're right there with OU (remember, those bowls looking to fill their openings can choose who they want). There are six teams in the MAC that will be able to go bowling, but one or two could be left sitting at home. In short, it also go to show how important it will be to win the East. It will not only get us into the MACC, but will assure us a bowl. If we get tripped up in one of these last three games, we very easily could be left at home at 8-4.

Losing to Ohio ensures that BG isn't going bowling. Last year a handful of team who were able to go bowling couldn't due to sanctions, and BG snuck in. Won't happen this year.

It's an interesting issue. We've got three games left. Do we need to win out to make a bowl? Do we deserve to make one if we don't? Does 2 out of 3 get us there with 8 wins?jpfalcon09 wrote:Losing to Ohio ensures that BG isn't going bowling. Steinbrecher was given a lot of credit for arranging the bowl deck chairs to everyone's satisfaction last year, but his primary responsibility is to the conference. If it's between us and another MAC school or us and a Sun Belt team then Kingston's powers of persuasion and lobbying will be put to the test.

Don't think these bowl predictions from Scout.com have been updated since Tuesday night's games. They have Ohio going to the Famous Potato Bowl and BG and Buffalo are not bowling any where. NIU, Toledo and Ball State all from west are bowling here.

Winning two of the last three gets us to 8-4 and probably lands us 4th or 5th among potential MAC bowl teams behind NIU, Ball State, Toledo...and maybe Buffalo.mscarn wrote:It's an interesting issue. Agreed. We're playing our asses off for a bowl and a MAC Championship game berth.jpfalcon09 wrote:Losing to Ohio ensures that BG isn't going bowling. Last year a handful of team who were able to go bowling couldn't due to sanctions, and BG snuck in. Won't happen this year.

One of the bowls to look out for as a secondary bowl is a bowl the MAC just announced a primary spot deal with, the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego. Army had a tie in to play an MWC school, and at 2-6 its unlikely they are going bowling. A lot of the projection sites have had a MAC team filling Army's slot in that bowl

Actually, it appears that there is still a quite realistic path to playing Buffalo for the MAC East championship even with a loss to Ohio. The must haves in that case are Toledo beating Buffalo, Buffalo beating Miami, and BG beating Eastern Michigan. In a 3 way with 2 losses, the third tie breaker favors BG. (Comparison of conference winning percentage of cross-over opponents of tied teams; a. Tie-breaker is awarded to the team whose cross-division opponents had the best cumulative conference winning percentage). The combination of Toledo & Eastern Michigan has BG ahead in that department now. It's unlikely they'll be passed, unless something strange like Western Michigan (who played Buffalo) wins against Northern Illinois.
To be fair, I was tipped off to this via a discussion over at Bull Run. The records are from Halloween. http://www.ubbullrun.com/2013/10/31/504 ... e-breakers
But, yeah, a win over OU is needed if they have any hope of a bowl should they lose at Buffalo.

I want us to take care of our own business. Don't rely on any other teams...that said, I will be rooting for Buffalo to lose Tuesday night. ;0)

I don't know about anyone else but I just want to win out, period. I want it to be a 7-0 Buffalo team vs a 6-1 BG team with the winner taking it all. I want to see this team win 4 must win games in a row and earn it straight up. If we back in to it, it won't feel right to me.
