If we are looking for clawson / lembo type guys, I have 3 names that I think BG should take a hard look at..
1) Kevin Higgins (citadel HC) : was the man who got it all rolling at Lehigh both clawson and lembo coached under him at Lehigh before he went to the Detroit lions as QB coach under morningweig.. Lots of HC experience and has been successful.
2) Joe morehead (fordham HC) was the OC at Uconn when they went to the fiesta bowl.. Went 11-2 at fordham this season made the fcs playoffs.. Also coached at Pitt and Akron ( great recruiter )
3) joe moglia ( HC coastal Carolina): former CEO of TD ameritrade made billions than left to volunteer at Nebraska under Osborne / solich .. Has coastal Carolina going deep in the fcs playoffs
I think these are the types of guys we need not random coordinators with no head coaching experience

There is no formula for what it takes to be a successful head coach. Urban was a position coach at ND. Clawson had previous head coaching experience. You want a guy who can thrive with the limitations BG has. I want a guy who is relatively young, and has the backbone to tell a kid no.

Hard telling. We know who a few potential candidates are, but somebody out of the blue could show up.

Moglia is 65...probably too old for consideration. Higgins is 43-58 at the Citadel...pass. Moorhead is intriguing, but he just signed a big extension at Fordham while he was rumored to be a candidate at UConn...he probably won't be looking to leave.
The thing I like about Durkin is he's coached under Jim Harbaugh and Meyer so he brings a certain ...pedigree..t the table most other candidates can't match

The more I think about Durkin, the better I like the idea of him as HC.

65 might be perfect. We don't want a coach that will want to go to the BCS. Why not get an old one with deep pockets?

The CC guy would be an interesting pick, no doubt. I definitely last time wanted somebody with head coaching experience. We had a program to build. What we now have is a solid program. We need somebody to carry the torch and even improve on it some. We need somebody to keep building and take the next step by winning those close games. For that reason, I don't put as much emphasis on head coaching experience as last time. That all being said, that CC guy really sounds interesting. His age doesn't both me too much. Part of what has made Solich so solid at Ohio is he has not cared to move on. Why make another career move so late in his career?
If we want somebody who will come here and stay here for a long time, we need one of two types. One, a Solich. Late career, final career stop. Or two, a Brady Hoke. Someone with a connection to the university, either a previous coach or an alum, who would like to be nowhere but Bowling Green. That can be hard to find, but you never know. Brady Hoke has always wanted to be nowhere but Michigan, and Solich sees no point in being anywhere but Ohio.

Who doesn't want a guy who wants to move up?

I want him to stay. I would normally say that's unreasonable but in this case it might make sense.

Like Gary Blackney? or Frank Solich? guys who had some success and then got passed by when new blood came in around them? I'm leery about hiring a guy who's happy with being at a certain level and staying there unless that level is the very top of the heap...we're a rung on the ladder...a level three boss you beat on the way to finishing a video game....we're not glass joe, but we aren't Mike Tyson. I don't want a guy who keeps puching reset instead of moving forward

And, he's a former BG player. He understands the rivalry games with tsun and the school down 75. He's been at Stanford, ND and built a hell of a D at Florida. He knows Ohio and, in particular, Northeast Ohio. IMO, we need to recruit and win recruits better in NE Ohio. Way too much talent going elsewhere.
I'm just sold on Durkin...young, fiery guy at 35 and has over a decade of experience. I hope he gets a shot...
