I have been enamored with Baylor's offense for awhile. I love how they play football. To bring a guy in that was on that offensive staff AND has HC experience bringing this system in someplace new...I'm very excited.

Anyhow, I figured that some people may not be overly familiar with it, so here is a pretty good breakdown of how Baylor plays offense. It's from this year, and obviously Babers wasn't on staff anymore, but if anybody wants to get a feel for what we could look like next year offensively, here ya go.

Our WR unit seems like it will match up well. Greene should do well in a zone blocking scheme. Matty J has to have a lead in a system that is high speed despite his lack of arm strength. "When the Bears get their offense humming they love to go fast, snapping the ball within 15 seconds of the whistle."

Do we have the speed right now to make this work? Moore can fly, but do Gallon, Deiter, Jackson and Burbrink have the speed to stretch the field vertically? Roger Lewis can fly...be interesting to see how Babers hiring impacts his decision.

I think it could work, but I think your fears make sense. Roger Lewis seems like a knucklehead if you look at his twitter pics. Not sure I would want him around.

He said he would keep basically the same plays but call them no huddle. No doubt it is more complicated than that but it seems like he wants to blend the high pace with what the players already know.

I think Gallon is a fantastic deep threat. You don't have to have raw speed to be a viable deep weapon.

Gallon has good size and should be able to body his way to balls...in short, he's a guy who's open even if he's not open. You can use that to your advantage if you're getting the defense to match him up one one one.

Clearly Moore is a perfect fit for this system.

I think Greene will find it awesome as well.

As others have mentioned it's not so much that the plays are drastically different than we've run recently. It's more about doing it from wider spread out formations (to force the defense to spread out and show their hand), and also speeding up the tempo which prevents the defense from substituting. I don't remember what system Baylor ran when they were awful, but these guys marched in, installed this new system, and had instant success. Babers did the same thing at EIU.

It may take a few seasons to get it running like a well oiled machine, like it did Baylor, but I think it'll work (and work better than our current offense) instantly.

Most MAC teams don't have the depth we do on defense...I don't know why more MAC schools don't go up tempo on offense to try to wear that first unit out. Given how congested things are between the hash marks in the NFL....I'm surprised you don't see more teams running three and four wide with everyone outside the hash marks to spread the defense out a bit

Our offense underachieved up until the last 5 games or so. This new offense will bring out some overachievment I would bet. Plus it's not like it has to be exactly like Baylor's. It can be molded to our WR, RB and QB skill sets.

Agreed, agreed.

Way back in one of the first posts about looking for a new coach I said that one thing I'd really want is a guy that is going to bring the up tempo offense to BG. We were the first team to really bring the spread into the conference and we racked up a ton of wins. I think bringing the up tempo game will work as well. The interim guy at Miami (former QB there, forgot his name) tried it but he didn't have the talent and tried to install it mid-season. I think though that we're going to be ahead of the curve on this one. And as you said, very few MAC defenses have any depth at all. If we can succeed in making these DTs run up and down the field for the first half of a game, we should be able to steamroll them in the 2nd half.

As to the NFL, it's coming. The NFL, as much as I love it, has always feared innovation. The coaches are all afraid to get fired for trying something new, so instead they stick to the status quo in the hopes they can do it a touch better than the other guys. But Chip Kelly's offense is absolutely lighting up the league (as I figured it would). New England and New Orleans have brought a lot of spread it out and speed it up principals into the league as well. As those teams keep tasting success I think you'll see the rest of the league copy it. A lot of people said that Kelly's system wouldn't work if he didn't have the superior talent he did at Oregon, and now he's turned Nick Foles instantly into the 2nd coming of Joe Montana. The tactics behind what he does are sound, and will work at all levels of football if given the chance.

Also, I think it is possible some of those RBs we brought in last year could move to WR.

The big question is how the pace and quick strike ability will affect the defense. Part of our success was attributed to the time of possession advantage that the offense was able to create. Even in the MAC, the Toledo's and Northern's of the world struggle on defense nearly as much as they succeed on offense.

Adding a brand new defensive staff makes maintaining the standard that was set the past two years that much harder. I really hope a defensive nosedive will not be a casualty of the pursuit of a more explosive offense considering it was defense that just won a championship.
