I don't see Moore, Coppet or Hunter out here.

Also, while we are fast on offense, lots of penalties and it looks like our struggles with third and a yard or fourth and a yard are back in this offense. The first team offense got stuffed on several tries inside the three against the second team defense trying to run.

Agreed. Houston is our short yardage guy but will this offense allow a substitution in those short yardage situations?

Dieter is doing exactly what I thought he would and Roger Lewis looks like a big play receiver too.

More and more turnover on downs by the offense when we run, this time when it was ones vs ones and twos vs twos. I know this is just a spring game but it's by far my number one concern right now . We look way more like we did several years ago when we averaged about 58 yards a game running when we couldn't move the ball against a steady wind than we looked at any point last year.

I agree about Dieter and Lewis, both looked great!

How do the other QB's look? If MJ goes down, will we have anyone who can step up and fill the void? I know there are a lot of QB's on the roster, but only one with any experience at all, and that minimally. Playing the Tex. transfer makes sense in that we need to see what we've got in him...but he can't play this season anyway.

Johnson looks better throwing the ball than he did early last year....he threw some nice long passes with touch and he was gunning it in there over the middle. Knapke can really power it n there as well. After that....who knows?

Lewis and Dieter? Good luck MAC DC's.....

I agree. Johnson looked the clear #1 he is. Knapke looked the best of the rest. Nichols got in there but didn't really seem to have a chance to do anything. Either the unit he was on was overmatched by the D or plays just seem to be breaking down. The jury is still out on him but he never really got a chance to show much in my opinion.

I also felt the defense was much better overall than the offense. That also goes for the number one defense compared to the number one offense. I think the D is going to have to carry us until the offense gets things worked out.

As I mentioned earlier, my main concern is the short-yardage running game on offense. Also, we threw a lot more bubble screens into the flats and short quick passes today, but a few of the deeper balls that we threw in situational sets starting at the 40 we had a couple really nice throws into the end zone. Dieter seems to be one of those guys who's going to catch it if he touches it, and Lewis was very impressive. But most if the passing was underneath.

As far as the kicking goes, the placekicking pretty good except for a blocked kick. The punting was what I would call pretty average but there was one shanked punt. We did not do any kick returns or punt returns today.

I asked Wagner about those guys and no response yet, but I can only assume they are hurt since the program didn't have any transfers to my knowledge.

The short yardage is a concern but unlike a few years ago we have a stable of quality backs in Greene, Coppet, givens, Houston and Martin. And even if we fail on 3rd and 1 I think this defense will get the ball back in the offenses hand in short order. They are impressive. Knapke is a Solid backup in my opinion and Dieter, Lewis, Jackson, Moore and Burbrink are going to be a nightmare for Defensive Coordinators to find ways to stop. Lots of weapons and a stellar defense has me very optimistic.

For those of you who were there, is it possible that the O is struggling because trying too hard to get a lot of plays in etc.? Fumbles in particular might be coming from trying to do things TOO fast. Would hope that things will get straightened out as the O line gets calls correct and they don't feel too rushed.

I thought Lynch looked really good today. The first team defense just looked really good as a unit, collectively.

I have no idea the breakdown of passes to runs, but it seemed to me we passed a lot more. If not it sure seemed that way. Greene had a few of his electrifying runs early but then the run game seemed to big down.

Too me the offense was moving at times but we looked rushed.....rushed to the point of it seems we're trying to go so fast that after a play our guys are scurrying everywhere and then we snap the ball for another play. Babers was asked the question why do you want the offense to go so fast and he responded that speed causes the opposition to make mistakes and adds confusion. One could easily argue it's also causing that to ourselves. Yes, I know we just started running this offense in the spring, but it almost seems too hectic at times. Think hurry-up offense - but the entire time.

As for the lack of punch in short-yardage running situations, I don't think it had anything to do with the pace at all, we were still lined up in more of a spread-like formation as if we were at any place on the field, but when we got inside the five or even down to the one or two, we just kept getting stuffed. We just couldn't get that push and the defense collapsed on us. Remember last year when we would lineup in a goal line set and run a guy like Houston right up the middle? Nothing like that today. Our QB was in shotgun and handed off and out guys were stopped.
