Nice to get a feel good win under the belt after last week's embarrassment, but I felt there were still too many black eyes today, especially on special teams. Losing Lynch and Adjei-Barimah didn't help either and hopefully they'll be good to go for Indiana.

It appears that our defensive scheme isn't going to change on giving receivers a ton of cushion in coverage, so that should be an adventure next week. Special teams were also bi-polar...two blocked kicks but had a blocked punt for TD and punt return for TD. Tackling issues were largely cleaned up but the talent VMI has didn't present a whole lot of opportunities for misses. We'll see how that works out next week. I still get the feeling I'm watching Gregg Brandon football part II and I want that feeling to go away.

Knapke was okay today, he didn't really get a chance to throw much until BG got up a few scores. His INT was terrible but he also had a nice ball to Lewis for a TD. Hard to gauge everything right now with this team with all the injuries. Hopefully they'll meet this adversity head on.

We did not dominate as I had hoped. Gave up too many plays on defense. This is a lower-level FCS program.

I suppose we should focus on the bright side. This game is a reminder that Bowling Green really does play a high level of football with some really talented student athletes. VMI just didn't have the talent that we have. They were completely outmatched at times, and you could see it. When you think about all the young men who suit up every Saturday across America, this game really shows you the caliber of football we are playing in the MAC. It's really good football.

But I don't think its going to be good enough for BGSU to win the next couple weeks. I hope I'm wrong.

After watching what I saw I don't want to hear a single person complaining about our DBs giving too much cushion. They were letting people get behind them constantly whenever they tried to man up. I'm sorry but the backfield is just not that good right now...hopefully they get better as the year goes on.

I thought Knapke threw the ball pretty well overall...he throws a real nice deep ball. The int was a clear miscommunication as he threw deep right as the wr broke off his route. Overall thought he was ok. Not that we need him to really have a huge game today...glad he got his feet wet before iu.

I'm anxious to see us play a home game against a talented team. Not real optimistic about a win, but hope I'm proven wrong.

I'd like to see Lunsford and Smith starting at DT. Royster and Schwieterman struggled to get any kind of push in the middle.

Callaway has a rocket arm...

I didn't like the second half, had only one offensive TD and everything looked out of sorts. Hopefully that was because the game was in hand and some players lost their edge. I understand our DBs may not be as good as years past, but teams with talent and good QBs are gonna chew up that defense all day long. Either you killed by the deep ball or you bleed to death on 6-7 yard out routes. I don't want to be "that guy" but the offense only scored 4 TDs against a low FCS school and that should be a huge cause for concern, even with a backup in.

Here's a stat: Bowling Green had 26 first downs. VMI had 24.

I realize we had a lot of big plays that shortened our drives. But, still: 24 first downs? That seems like a lot.

I agree it's going to get chewed up, but you can't play press man and just hope they magically start playing better either. If your corners are getting beaten deep (and there were at least three times they had a wr behind them today) you must sit back and give that cushion. I know it's frustrating as all hell to watch us give up easy completions all day, but you have at least make them work and execute to get down the field. No coach is ever going to just man up and watch his corners get beaten over the top all game. Pretty sure that would be equally frustrating. Bottom line on that is quite simple: the back end of our defense MUST play better if we're going to field a competent defense.

The offense is a work in progress to be sure. At times it was awesome, at others it really sputtered. It was gonna take some time to transition even with Johnson. Now with the backup qb playing we're further behind. Especially since I would imagine Johnson got a vast majority of the reps since he was trying to learn the new system.

As to a schad's stat on first downs I'm not surprised. We really struggled on both sides of the ball in the second half and allowed that gap to be closed. Big plays and the turnover margin is what won this game. Hopefully we will be able to generate those against Mac teams as well.

VMI ran 90 plays.


That's a big problem. Defense can't be out on the field 100 plays a game or they'll all be on the sidelines on crutches by November.

If VMI is running that many plays, how many will IU run next week? 125? yeesh - this defense is more than worrisome.

You could look at the numbers and say the defense worked more or less as planned..they chewed yards between the 20's and didn't score. But you have to get the defense off the field or you will burn them up. We aren't getting enough pressure to force the qb's into making the mistakes that lead to more turnovers...never mind the number of times we're giving the offense short yardage on 3rd downs.

I disagree. They did not even play up enough to even say that… They are not that bad..

Playing "up" was not a major factor in giving up 321. What were you watching?

You're just flat out wrong gs. I don't have the game taped, or I'd go back and watch, but there were quite a few times we had our CBs (at least the outside guys) within 5 yards of the LOS. That's playing up, IMO. And there were multiple plays that those VMI WRs got over the top of our DBs even though we were giving them that cushion.

The way the CBs are playing right now we're going to get shredded through the air against any decent passing team. It'll work better if our front 4 can start pressuring the QB, but that's a big if right now.

Our defense looks awful, and it's not JUST scheme.

Just did not see "quite a few" but would love to see the stats as far as how that played out. I saw a lot underneath . There is no reason for the D to be this bad. This is coaching….. We might not be as good as lat year but should not be this bad. Over 1000 yards passing in two games to powerhouses VMI and WKU. This scheme sucks. I have one more game to give this a chance but then I am done. This is going no where...
