One good thing from this

Post by Class of 61 »

OK, So I'm trying to find some good things that happened, or at least ONE good thing. Our new punter did well, despite some poor spec. Team coverage (nobody has mentioned THAT problem yet.)

In addition , he made a couple of tackles the other guys missed. I suppose you could argue he outkicked the coverage, but I was impressed.

Also, I still remember, along with Mike, Dave Clawson showing us Given's hi- lites on signing day . Givens needs to be used a bit more than in garbage time.... #-o

The only "good" thing about today IMO was it wasn't a MAC contest.

I think Givens did a good job returning kickoffs. It was good to put him out there instead of Moore who made some bad decisions against Indiana.

I think it had more to do with the fact that Moore was banged up a bit in the Indy game... If you recall he hobbled off the field, went back in later, but wasn't much of a factor late in that game.
But I really do think we could be using Givens more. I raised the question about Travis Greene also possibly being banged up as he had very few carries against Wisc.

Last October BG went to Mississippi State and lost by a point. Last Saturday Mississippi State beat LSU (on the road) who beat Wisconsin three weeks ago.

All of which means...nothing.

There is no transitive property where college football is concerned. It's all about matchups.

BG matched up horribly with Wisconsin in just about every conceivable way. It's why I felt pretty certain the team was going to get steamrolled. Now did I expect Wisconsin to tally a record day for yards in Big Ten history? No. But if someone had told me that would happen before the game, I'd have said, "It could happen with this defense; the injuries BG has; and the poor defensive schemes (my view) BG has played so far this season."

Given Johnson's injury and when it happened, I think the offense has performed pretty remarkably this year. I cannot say the same about the defense. There isn't anything positive I feel came out of that game with Wisconsin. Nothing. I don't think the team got better (and may have gotten worse).

And I didn't like the coach's comments after the IU win -- and thought the Blade's Hackenberg was spot on with his analysis of those ill advised remarks.

Nobody is giving up on the season that I know of; not with a MAC title still up for grabs. But none of us expected this team to be among the dregs of the dregs defensively in all of college football, either. We have had -- and we expect -- better.

There's nothing wrong with that. And if a coach gets defensive because some fans are saying it, then I'd say he might want to reconsider his choice of professions. Acting thin-skinned toward fans when you're coaching mid level D-1 teams isn't a solid way to make a good impression on anyone.
