NIU put up 27 pts and over 450 yds on us in the MACC...we won that championship because our offense scorched them.

20 points really, I discount that garbage score Lynch got at the end of the game. That was a total team win anyways. Offense clicked, defense forced two picks and the kicking game was solid. Doesn't matter how good your offense is, you're not going to win many games giving up an average of 40 points per game. I imagine things will improve heading into the MAC schedule and this may all be moot in November. The fact is we're going to have a game or two this year the defense has to win from the offense not clicking. I hope that side of the ball can get straightened out to do that.

The reference to Gregg Brandon has been made a couple times, I was hesitant to jump onto the comparison. I see it now. Gregg Brandon's teams could beat the Indiana's of the world, but they would then give up record setting performances to a team virtually once a year. We would be in contention for winning the conference, but we could never manage to actually win when we needed to. Some people complain that Clawson's style was boring, but we won the games we needed to and we won the conference championship. I see this current team as exciting, winning the fun games, but we'll lose the important games more than likely and always be really close to winning the conference but never managing to do it. And before you tell me I shouldn't write him off so quickly, and injuries are all over the place, etc., every coach has dealt with injuries. I have this bad feeling defensive injuries may become a product of this system, which is also very unfortunate.

Until he beat Buffalo and NIU, Clawson was practically eviscerated for "never winning the close one"..that includes the 2012 game against Kent tht decided the East and pretty much every game against UT.

People talk about Brandon like he's Osama Bin Ladin...but the fact remains, the high water point for this program happened under his watch. He won two straight Bowl games, beat ranked opposition and finished 2003 in the top 25 and finished juuuuuust outside the top 25 in 2004.

Brandon proved he could win with talent but he couldn't recruit it. Obviously it's still too early to know what Babers will be able to do, especially this season with losing Johnson. The proof will be 2-3 years from now if he's still here and has a chance to fill the roster with his players. I do believe we overestimated the talent returning on defense this year.

I liked Brandon for the most part. It reached a point where it was time for him to go but I thought he did a decent job. I said after our first game that comparing this defense to a Brandon defense was a bit off. It took 3-4 years for the deficiencies on defense to really show up consistently. I do think their offensive mindsets are similar though.

I expected the defense to take a step back but I didn't think it would be 2 leaps back, injuries or not.
