BG vs Buffalo

This is obviously an important game, as they all are from here on out being that it's a conference game. While we have won the last three in the series vs Buffalo, I didn't realize it until I looked but Buffalo has actually won its last two games in BG and both were crushing, heartbreaking losses for the Falcons. We didn't play UB at home in 2012 as the game was moved to Columbus (horrible idea and turnout) but in the two previous meeting at the Doyt, BG missed a FG at the end in a 2-point loss in 2010 (ran a play to center the kick and still missed it) and in the meeting before that on 2008, BG blew a 27-7 lead in the fourth quarter and lost 40-34 in OT in a game that cost BG a trip to the MAC Championship (and also Gregg Brandon his job). That game ranks right up there for me with the "Fat Punter" game vs CMU in 1994 as one of the most crushing losses because of what all was riding on it and how we lost it. And if all that wasn't crazy enough, UB's trip to BG before that was in 2006 where there was two stadium evacuations because of severe weather in a game I believe was decided in 3 overtimes. So yeah, I think it's pretty safe to say this could be another wacky game. Who wants to look up UB's school record for offense and see if we can hold them under it???

I've always said on here that the series between BG and UB is whacky. You pointed out the three previous games at the Doyt. There's also the 09 game at UB which we came back from a big deficit to win in the final seconds. And the 2011 game at UB where the defenses outscored the offenses until our passing offense woke up. We were down to third and fourth string running backs in that one.

I've always liked the BG UB rivalry, heartbreaks and all. The 2010 game was horrible to watch, the 2008 game was just heartbreaking. But the 06, 07, and 09 games were all thrills. And it only made sense that last year's game decided the East.

Yes, strangely all but one of the games in the UB series (the first one) away from BG have gone the Falcons' way. We've beaten them in Amherst on their home field and on neutral sites in Columbus and Buffalo but the games at the Doyt are tilted in their favor. But the 2008 game will always linger as one of the toughest games we've ever lost considering we were up 20, at home, in the fourth quarter, with the MAC East title riding on it.

Buffalo is hard team to read because their schedule has been a barbell. On one end you have wins agains t s**t teams like Duquense, Norfolk State and Miami. On the other you have losses to a really good baylor team and a poor Army team. Baylor hung 63 on them gaining almost 9 yards a play.

I think we're going to drill them....

Predictions anyone?

Despite the visitor having the upper hand most of the time in this series, I'm gonna call for a BG win. I think this game is going to show both teams a thing or two about what they have at this point in the season. For BG, it'll show if we have any sort of a defense at all, like ANYTHING, or if the first 5 weeks is what we're gonna have all season. For UB, it'll give them a measuring stick after facing two FCS teams mixed in with the likes of Baylor. One thing is for sure though, the loser of this game is OUT of the MAC East race because both of these teams will lose at minimum another game after this, probably two more.

We like to give up 42 points and have extra points blocked so:

US 48
them 42

BG - 52
UB - 31

Offense and defense each take a step forward this week.

My hope is this is the week our D comes together. UB is heavy on the pass, lenient on the run. Our run D has had only one bad game so far ... Wisconsin ... and against Indiana they just wore out.

My hope is our front 7 basically spends the whole day blitzing to stop the run and going after Licata and forcing him to make bad decisions. In this scheme, the secondary would give up some big plays (like they already do all the time) but the front 7 could hide some of the secondary's problems.

Also I imagine we get Ward back this week. I can't help but think he makes an impact. I also hope we rotate players in the secondary all day. I liked what I saw out of Turner.

Buffalo will score points, especially if they game plan to throw the ball. Them losing Oliver at tailback has really set their offense back but Licata can still make plays. I'm hoping the defense can provide a good game to ease some nerves and grow confidence for the team heading into October.

BG on top 54-49. It shouldn't be that close, and I honestly could see us losing this one as well. But I have to go for the home team and pick us to score 7 touchdowns, miss an extra point, and kick two field goals.

Don't forget to add that we'll have five or six passes batted down and we'll allow two scoring drives of only one play.
