R.I.P Paul Olscamp

Post by gmartin »

Wasn't sure where to post this as I don't see much activity in free for all anymore.. Former BGSU President, 1982-1995, Paul Olscamp has passed away.

Very sad news. But I 100% agreed with his comment about the parking/walking situation at BG when he made it. I commend him for saying what he said. A lot of us did. And we did and still do have a walking problem at BG. We now have surface lots all over the damn place and more are coming. And by the looks of half of our student body, the walking problem has gotten worse. A lot worse. Yeah, I said it....
GO BG!!!

I'll never forget when he was passed up and down the student section in the Ice Arena. It was classic.

Indeed it was. I only regret that I wasn't close enough to cop a feel :-D

I never knew him personally, but many years ago I worked with a lady who had been an administrative assistant in his office and she had nothing but good things to say about him.

A friend and I sat beside President Olscamp at at BG vs Toledo football game at Toledo. He was right at home being "one of the boys" and not being "presidential" at times. It was great fun and one of those unforgettable experiences!

I was just going to cite this as my fondest memory of him. First went Freddie then Frieda. The section started chanting "we want Paul; we want paul". He dutifully went over and they crowd surfed him from the glass to the top of the section.

I don't even remember the reason for the game delay but I remember that clear as if it happened yesterday.

He also sang a mean "O Canada".

Humor and fact all in one. I believe the decline of the mall is an example of America has a walking problem. Reality is that on a cold day it's a long walk but I've walked my young kids from Campus Polleyes to the stadium and from the Stroh to Dairy Queen and back on both occasions on nice days of course. The campus is compact.

Realizing how long it has been since he left campus just reminds me how old I've gotten.
I proudly chose to be a Falcon and a Falcon I will remain until the end.

As a student University Ambassador I remember working games in the President's Box and it was BIG NEWS when he decided you should be able to wear jeans in the box. "It was a football game after all." We were never allowed but that was okay, it was still a great experience.

If I remember correctly there was something wrong with the glass on one of the boards. Might have been shattered or something. I just remember seeing him being passed along to the top.

You're right. There was a lengthy delay and the students were entertaining themselves. I had forgotten that they passed Fred and Frieda up, but when you mentioned it above, I could picture it like it was yesterday! It was an epic moment in the arena and endeared Paul to the Falcon Hockey fans and students in a way that hadn't been seen before, or after for that matter! Truly one of a kind moment for all of us who were lucky enough to be there. Also always looked forward to the last home game/senior night when Paul sang "O Canada." He had a beautiful voice!

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

I really liked Paul as BG President....he was always open to talking with students and would eat lunch with them. Yeah he didn't see eye to eye with the faculty a whole lot but he was a very good President.
