We're off this week but we can be MAC West fans this weekend

Akron at Ball State
Ohio at Western Michigan
UMass at Toledo.

All three of the MAC West teams in the matchups above can help BG by winning. We might be off this weekend, but BG's chances of winning the East can increase with losses to Akron, Ohio and UMass. All three are currently behind BG in the standings but we all know there's a lot of football yet to be played. And I could easily see this year coming down to another tie-breaker. If Akron wins this weekend they move into a tie with BG. BG has beaten OU and UMass already which is key but keep in mind not all East teams play the same number of divisional games because of the unbalanced divisions. Akron will play every MAC East team, BG and OU do not which could come back and haunt us in a tie-breaker. Tie-breakers can become tricky because of it. In short, we can "win" this week despite not playing, but things could get very tight if those East teams win this weekend.

The BiG one is Akron at Ball State. BSU just knocked off CMU this past weekend. I don't see Ohio beating WMU, who is gonna be jacked to play at Waldo after beating us. UMass could give tsun a scare cuz they can score points.

I actually think all three of those games are equally big because we could seriously see some of those teams claw their way into a multiple-team tie at the end by the time it's all said and done, sort of like what happened in 2005. Remember how there was, I believe, a three-way tie for first (BG being one of those teams) and Akron needed like 7 or 8 games to break its way and they ALL did, sending the Zips to Detroit. That is exactly why getting help from other teams (such as MAC West schools vs MAC East matchups) is always good.

BG has beaten OU and UMass head-to-head which is very important, but OU just turned around and beat Akron to get right back into the mix again and UMass rebounded after a terrible loss to Miami (UMass "should" 3-1 in the MAC and "could" be 4-0) by winning two in a row. It would almost be fitting to see a team like UMass start 0-6, 0-2 MAC then run the table and win the East in a tie-break or something crazy like that. The MAC East is way too unpredictable right now and I will take any and all help we can get. If Akron, Ohio and UMass all lose this weekend, BG would be a HUGE winner despite not playing at all. If a couple of those team like Akron and Ohio win (especially Akron), it'll make things very tight. I can't remember having what feels like such an important bye week for BG with key games riding on it by other teams like this in awhile.

The MAC East is currently 2-8 vs the west, and both wins are against EMU. And one of the losses is against EMU. Ouch ....

We got as much help as we possibly could this past weekend without playing. Now it's up to us. If we don't make it back to Detroit, we'll only have ourselves to blame.
