Malik Brown
Malik Brown
I was excited when we got word that Malik Brown was transferring from Tennessee and then again when we learned he would be eligible to play this year. I have to admit its been disappointing that he hasn't been able to make the field much this year...especially when you consider how we've struggled on defense. He played in the VMI and Wisconsin games and had a couple of tackles, but I haven't heard his name the last few weeks. I was expecting more. He's only a red-shirt freshman so maybe he's still adjusting?

Re: Malik Brown
I think we read too much into a player being from a power 5 school sometimes. We were all excited for that receiver from Michigan a few years ago and he hardly saw the field. Jury is still out on this one obviously but I never get too excited about these transfers.
Re: Malik Brown
I believe the Michigan transfer you're thinking of was Je'ron Stokes, who wore #16. You probably associate Malik Brown with the name Stokes because Je'ron Stokes had a brother, Malik Stokes who was a QB on our roster for awhile. I don't recall Malik ever getting on the field and if he did, he must not have done enough to make me remember him. You're right, Je'ron was 4 star rated by Rivals who came highly hyped as a big play, speed guy that could change a game, but he never did a whole lot here. I found some stats on him - 15 catches for 114 yds and 1 td. He left here after a year and went to Norfolk State and his numbers for his one year there were almost identical to what he did at BGSU. Malik ended up leaving for Norfolk State, as well.kdog27 wrote:I think we read too much into a player being from a power 5 school sometimes. Hopefully the transfer WR coming in next year from Baylor will come closer to fulfilling the hype, but I agree with you, probably best not to get too excited. IF GUYS CAN GET HEALTHY AND STAY HEALTHY, we should have a strong receiver group next year, whether the transfer pans out or not. If he does get on the field and make an impact, then that'll make an already good group even better.

Remembering all these former players can get so confusing that I confuse myself when trying to edit a post, then end up turning the edit into a separate post that I then can't delete!

Thomas, Walker and Montgomery have all played well this year...haven't noticed Baird as much..but there isn't a lot of reps to give another DE.

Re: Malik Brown
I believe he got in during the VMI game for a couple series. I'm honestly not surprised he isn't playing, either he hasn't grasped the defensive playbook well enough for they believe the players ahead of him are better. I imagine he'll be able to make more of an impact next year once some of the seniors ahead of him graduate.

It's good to see that Shannon Smith has found a place in the defensive end rotation. He was one of two recruits we thought we had lost from the 2013 class (along with Brandon English) but now he's getting reps at DE and English is returning kicks.
