Is anyone still not sold on Babers?

I am asking this question to see if I need redirected or not, but after seeing so many ups and downs this season, coming off the clinching of another division title and trip to Detroit, I just don't feel settled with Dino Babers as our coach yet.

Positives - He seems like a nice guy, polished and carries himself well, has an exciting offense and decent coaching track record. Will probably recruit well. Beat Indiana, won the division with a back-up QB and has kept the team in tact morale wise.

Negatives - DEFENSE is not a priority. Seems to be a self-promoter for a bigger job. Let us get us destroyed and embarrassed by Western KY. and Wisconsin. Was handed a Ferrari and brought home a Cadillac. Have not really BEAT down a team no matter how inferior with this high-powered offense in a weak Division in the East.

I'm not hung up on Clawson leaving and what he did for the program. I just want to feel better about our coach and future...a win over Foledo and another MAC championship will do it!! :D

It's no secret Dino isn't here for the long haul. If BG wins in Detroit again he may very well take off and we'll be discussing a new coach again in January. I think his offense was much more bark than bite, it's great to run plays a million miles an hour but when the offense is inconsistent it works to the benefit of the opposition.

The defense has come a long way and he deserves credit for that. Defense has won this team their last 3 games. I'd like to see some more convincing wins but that might not be feasible this year without Johnson.

I get what you are saying, I really do. Let's all face it, Babers will be gone soon (hell maybe even this year), if we win the title. He doesn't seem to stick around wherever he coaches (just look at his resume http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dino_Babers).

Here is what I see... new coach, new scheme, new (unproven) QB, crazy amount of injuries, ugly loses, ugly wins. defense progressing, offense regressing. Not a lot of consistency, but winning close games

My thought is this... Enjoy the ride, We are one game away from back-to-back MAC titles. Babers will be gone soon. The cupboard will not be bare. Recruits want to play in this scheme and see us competing for championships. The next coach (I am guessing) won't be another 'scheme guy'. I can bet Kingston doesn't go that route twice.

We were 10-4 last year beating up a lot of bad teams until the NIU game. I think we had a Cadillac and we still have a Cadillac. Maybe just needs a tune up

Um, I doubt this. After one season?

No. That would reflect poorly on him. I really can't see that happening.

Besides, what is his argument for another job? "They gave me the keys to a Cadillac and ... I kept it out of the ditch?"

He needs to prove something. He proved something at Eastern Illinois, but he really hasn't demonstrated anything new here.

He's doing fine. The team improves with each week after a rough start. I'm satisfied. But I don't see his argument for a different job, even if he wins the conference title out of the gate. He's really just following in Clawson's footsteps with most of this.

If one and done sounds crazy... how about 3 of them in a row?

Why would he care if it reflected poorly on him if he was at the job he wanted? Who would judge him?

Illinois might just be open and he has a hx in the state. That wouldn't be a huge surprise.

I enjoy his attitude and unfortunately I don't think we will ever know what a fully developed Baber's program will look like because he will leave too soon. Being a BG fan I hope we have good to great years with coaches that are headed up the coaching chain. It's nice to see Urban be successful and get BG mentioned periodically (not that I'm invested in the osu cult). I truly believe some bigger school is going to gravitate to Baber's attitude and swagger especially if they need a transfusion like Illinois.

Illinois is probably coach searching in a few weeks but no way in hell they look to another hot name in the MAC. They already got burned by the abysmal failure that is Beckman. I'm still puzzled why a B1G AD gave him a third year. It's not like Purdue where Hazell inherited a mess - Beckman inherited a team that had been to and won two straight bowl games and not far removed from a Rose Bowl appearance.
Also, no way in hell Babers leaves after only one year unless a big program is in desperation mode. We'll have him for 2, hopefully 3 - 5 years. I'm realistic, I know the MAC is known for rent-a-coaches, but I also can't think of many times when a coach leaves after only one year.
It also is uncommon for a coach to leave after only two. If a coach is offered a big job after only two years, he must have done something truly extraordinary (Haywood going from 1-10 to 10-4 and conference title, Doeren taking NIU to the Orange Bowl.)

I agree with this. He's done an average job iMO. It would be different if he took this team and pushed it over the top. He hasn't done that. We have the same record as last year at this point and it hasn't exactly been as pretty. It's impossible to say what we would like with Johnson but I don't think our record would be any different. 8-2 at best.

For me this next game will be very telling. I'm still on the fence as I think a lot of BG fans are. Let's face it the MAC east is the worst collection of teams in football. 3 or 4 West teams could go undefeated against that slop. I want to see how we look on the road against a team that has our number.

Criticism of Babers and the defense is so week three. The team has shown a lot of character in holding it together after losing the MAC's top QB and getting drilled so badly early on. I don't know if you can attribute that to the coaches or to seniors like Lynch, Martin, etc... I suspect it's a good deal of both. It will be interesting to see how things shake out next year, particularly under center. Does Johnson come back...does Knapke improve on some of his weaknesses in locking onto guys and dealing with the blitz...does Richards bump anyone down the depth chart...is Callaway going to get a legit shot in t he spring to start? How are we going to integrate Rhodes into the offense when we aren't even fully utilizing the guys we have now? Will Gallon be able to go at all?

Dino will be here next year...I don't know how we'll fare though because we are literally losing the guts of our defense.

I think that there may be a couple years here where the MAC doesn't have a head coach move on to a better job. Big 5 schools are getting gun shy with taking a MAC head coach. The track record isn't great the few who have left. If BGSU wins out, maybe Dino gets some interest. I personally think the next guy to leave is PJ Fleck or Matt Campbell. I think both may be gone after next season.

Fleck could be gone this year because Ihe seems like the kind of guy who will jump on the first job he can get that pays more and seems like a promotion. Campbell? He's becoming the football answer to Coach Tricia Cullop. Do well enough to come soooooo close to getting the big prize but they never get there.
