Medical redshirt for Matt J.?

Being that he only played in one game and suffered a season ending injury, I know M.J. would meet the requirement for a medical redshirt, however, the NCAA has a five year rule and under most circumstances, a player who has already taken a voluntary redshirt year, (which I believe he has), cannot get a 2nd redshirt for medical reasons. There is a process where a player can apply for a waiver and be granted a 2nd redshirt year. I have heard of players being granted a 6th year, and not knowing any specific circumstances of those instances, my assumption is that they may have been approved in cases where players lost 2 years due to injury, but I'm not certain of that.
Has anyone heard if he will be requesting such a waiver and trying to get last year's eligibility restored? Anyone know if there is a precedent for a waiver being granted to other players under the same circumstances?

My immediate thought goes to Case Keenum at Houston. If I remember correctly, he sat out one year with a redshirt and then tore his ACL a few years later a couple of games into the season and was granted a sixth year. I'm almost positive that first year was not due to any kind of injury.

I looked it up...Keenum got an extra year because Houston cited a shoulder separation in his SR year of HS that they claimed sidelined him for his freshman year. Don't know if Johnson has an injury he could point to from his past or if he even wants to play an extra year.... or for that matter if he can even play this year.

Doubt Johnson has a case but, Chris Gallon has had a career similar to Brandon Doughty who was just granted a 6th year.
WKU's Brandon Doughty
2010 - Redshirt
2011 - R-FR **Torn ACL 3 games in
2012 - R-SO ** Injured again
2013 - R JR
2014 - R SR
2015 - 6th year granted
Chris Gallon career
2011 - Redshirt
2012 - R FR
2013 - R SO Played in 7 games **Torn ACL
2014 - R JR **Torn ACL missed entire season
2015 - R SR
2016 - ??

This came up before, and we had no definitive answer if Matt Johnson would be able to get a sixth year. I sure hope he can. I'd love to see Johnson have a hell of a 2015 against one rough schedule, then in 2016 tear up the Buckeyes in Columbus in year three with this offensive system. As for Gallon, I'm also not sure. He redshirted in 2011 and I do not think it was injury related. I'd love it if he could get another year, but at the same time Gallon plays at a position which often gets injured so if he does not want to put his body through another year I could not blame him.

They seem to have given Doughty a RS "just because"... so if Johnson and Gallon were to want to pursue one... who knows?

Before he was injured he was a legit NFL prospect. If he has explosiveness back, he is going to have many more years on that knee.

Johnson is not eligible under current rules. His first redshirt had to have been from an injury. This is pointless to discuss.

Houston was able to verify his freshman season RS was due to injury. If they didn't he wouldn't have been eligible for a sixth year.

Doughty didn't have an injury in his RS year and they gave him another year

In Gallon's case he played 7 games in 2013, which I believe puts him over the threshold for that being counted as eligible for medical redshirt. Playing in that many games, I think the NCAA would consider that as a full season under the rule. I think that puts him in the same position as Johnson.

I don't believe you are correct. Players have taken voluntary redshirt years to start their careers, gotten hurt for a full year, and been granted a 6th year.
The only thing I DO know for certain: we won't know anything about this until he has exhausted his "regular" eligibility. At that point, he can then apply to the NCAA for the extra year, and see if it's granted. They do not decide these until the players has finished all of his eligibility to that point.

We've been over this a million times...it is confusing because the NCAA seems to go against their own rules from time to time....but...you are not supposed to get an extra year if you exceed your five year clock unless you can show that you lost a year due to a factor outside your control beside the year you were injured in.
Keenum got an extra year because he was hurt as a HS senior and that was used to justify his first redshirt year...yuou can look it up.
Here's an overview that should explain everything.

From what I have seen/heard, Matt talks likes this will be his last season.
It sounds like maybe you cannot have 2 redshirts unless both are medical related (Matt's freshman redshirt was not medical). If that is the case, I suppose this is indeed his last season.
Man I'd love to see what he can do with another year. He'd re-write the record books. It's a shame if he only gets 3 seasons worth of playing time.

And I'd love to see Matty J leading the Falcons into the Shoe for the opener next year. I don't think he'll be back after this year but we can hope.

Brian Thomas was granted a 6th year, seemingly out of the blue. It would be pretty awesome if Johnson were to get one and be at the helm to start next year.
His career was...
2010 - RS
2011 - R FR **Missed 9 games due to injury
2012 - R SO
2013 - R JR
2014 - R SR
2015 - Granted 6th year....kicked off team
I have no idea why he was granted that year.
Johnson...
2011 - RS
2012 - F FR
2013 - R SO
2014 - R JR **Missed 12 games due to injury
2015 - R SR
2016 - ????
