Notre Dame vs. the MAC

I'm reasonably sure Notre Dame has never played a MAC school in football.
(I'll stand corrected)
Looks like Ball State just got a game with them.

Coach Lembo might have something to brag about if this was in 1978 and not 2018. Much of the luster has worn off.
Their 2016 non-conference schedule is also interesting given our situation this year:
Thurs., Sept. 1 at Georgia State (Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Ga.)
Sat., Sept. 10 at Indiana
Sat., Sept. 17 vs. Eastern Kentucky
Sat., Sept. 24 at Florida Atlantic
That's what our competitors are doing while we'd schedule the Seattle Seahawks (and three other NFL teams on the road) if we could.

ND played WMU in 2010. That might be the only meeting between ND and MAC. Honestly shocking to think about. They hosted Tulsa in 2010 and lost and have hosted Utah before and probably a few other mid majors so it is so surprising to have such a lack of scheduling with the mid major conference in their stomping ground.

In the late 1990's Miami-Ohio was on Notre Dame's schedule, but Miami was eventually dropped and replaced (with Georgia Tech I believe). It was right around the time when Miami had that 10-1 team and when Notre Dame had done or was doing their stadium expansion.

When one talks to a t-shirt Notre Dame fan outside the mid-west, there is always one common theme: Notre Dame is a "national university".
For example, why doesn't Notre Dame join a conference? -- "They recruit nationally". (well who the f*** doesn't?)
So, it's not really surprising to me that they wouldn't schedule any regional non B10 teams. It's much easier for the t-shirts to swallow losing to Navy that it is losing to Western Michigan.

Games played against the MAC or scheduled when they were in the MAC.
2010 - WMU
2013 - Temple (scheduled when they were in the MAC)
2015 - UMass
2017 - Miami (OH)
2018 - Ball State
I'm guessing Kelly is just more open to playing MAC schools than previous coaches.
For what it's worth...Michigan currently has 0 MAC teams on their schedule going forward. 2015, 2016, 2017 are complete.

I remember that. It was to be the first game in the refurbished stadium. The word on the street was that NBC objected. Whether that is true or not, who knows.
