Spring ball is here!

Pro day was yesterday for a handful of guys looking to make it at the next level, if I had to wager a guess I'd say that Lynch, Martin and Walker become UDFAs.

Anywho, spring ball started today and there's a lot of excitement around having a healthy MJ and the inclusion of Robbie Rhodes to the offense. The athletics Twitter account said they'll be posting updates throughout the next few weeks which I'll try to link up here. Hard to believe its already been three months since the Camellia Bowl.

Alright! My biggest three questions for spring practice:
1: Who starts at QB? And that includes a sub-question: is Matt Johnson recovered fully?
2: Is the offense as explosive as we're all hoping?
3: What impact will all the new faces have on defense?

Keys to watch for -

How's Matty J look? Hear he is throwing and things are progressing, but probably no contact or Spring Game action. Who gets second reps and Spring Game reps? Feels like Clayton.

Who's filling in for D spots. New faces on the front 7.

Keep an eye on who's practicing and who's not. Some are going to be due to injuries, some maybe not.

Can't wait to see who steps up and how the D evolves.

This means less than 6 months til the season!!! LOL. Will be a very interesting camp. My biggest ? is the D line and LB positions. We are gonna need to fill a lot of holes.

Few things from yesterday:

Zach Colvin is officially cleared to resume football activities and was present at yesterday's practice.

Matt Johnson says he isn't 100% yet but feels confident that he'll get there soon enough. He is also embracing open competition for the QB job.

Chris Gallon was there however not in pads, he spent some time working out along the sidelines as he works back from a knee injury.

Rhodes will be huge and Lewis, Dieter, Moore and the rest should only improve as they master the system and continue to develop.

I really think Bryan Thomas should get a shot based on his ability to rush the passer. That's such a valuable commodity you'd think some team would find a role for him.

Coach Lynch is now listed as *both* the offensive line coach and running backs coach in the directory. If so that would be one of the most unique arrangements/combinations in Division I coaching history. The OL and RB's work together for pass protection and running plays but the positions are obviously completely different. Can anyone report how this is working at practice? Is a graduate assistant coach (possibly coach Marshall) handling the RB's? And who is coaching the tight end/h-back position?

Also, Roy Wittke has moved to recruiting coordinator replacing Andy Sowder who joined the on-field staff. Again, this is a bit odd considering that Sowder heavily utilized social media (a prerequisite for modern recruiting) while Wittke is an older, veteran coach that was the only staff member not to have a Twitter account last year (and still doesn't). Can he handle the demands of recruiting high school athletes in 2015? Having people like Fleck out there makes this position all the more important.

May update: still no Director of Football Operations and the new recruiting coordinator is still not on Twitter (utterly baffling in 2015), although a new Instagram account for the program has been started that appears to be regularly updated.

As predicted, Coach Vincent Marshall is coaching the RB's.

Wittke's son has been hired as the new DFO. Wittke was the former DFO and was moved to recruiting coordinator.

Hope he does a great job as there's been some big-time people in this position before. Clawson's last DFO held the same job at USC and Washington and currently serves in the same position at UNLV. The guy before him (Clint Dowdle) left to become the Chief of Staff for the Kansas State athletic department.
