Beckman fired by Illinois

The ax finally came down in Champaign as Illinois has fired Tim Beckman. They claim it was after an internal investigation but obviously his losing record played a key part. This never was a good fit between the two. Surprised he wasn't fired last year.

This wasn't about losing.

Since it's for cause, he does not receive the $3.1 million remaining on the last two years of his original five-year contract or the $743,000 called for if his contract had been bought out.

BUMMER!

I know this wasn't about losing. I'm just saying have a very poor conference record didn't help things either. I was surprised he wasn't released last year due to his record.

If he was pressuring players to not report injuries or medical staff to rush kids back, he absolutely deserved to get fired.

Beckman watched Varsity Blues one too many times.

Fair enough. The losing certainly did not break any ties in his favor.

He wasn't fired because Illinois didn't want to pony up the money to pay off his remaining contract. This is a win-win for them now as they get rid of him for ridiculous conduct and don't owe him a cent in the process.

Babers name is already being thrown around as a possible candidate when Illinois opens their head coaching search after the season.

I highly doubt Illinois will go after a MAC coach after Beckman's win/loss record and conduct. They will probably go with a coordinator from the Big 10 and SEC as their next coach.

Should have stayed in Tol; feel sorry for his family. Not him.

He won't be a head coach again for a long time, if ever. This kind of trouble is bigger than records, this is personal and professional incompetence and a lack of integrity at a time when football injuries are in the news all the time.

Beckman is stupid. Plain stupid. Encouraging players to not report or seek treatment for injuries is career suicide in this day and age. He's done as far as I can tell.

If it were someone as accomplished as Meyer or Saban then a desperate program like a Colorado or an Iowa State might take a risk. But Beckman has no career accomplishments as head coach to merit such a position. He has no championships as head coach and only two winning seasons. He might be able to land a D2 job or an FCS job down the line.

Agreed. I remember when Meyer left and Brandon got the job over him. He was po'ed BiG time but thank goodness Krebs didn't hire Beckman.

Funny you should say that. According to Wikipedia, he scored a 14 on the ACT.

(That's gotta be a prank. That can't be true. Right?)

The Chicago Tribune name-dropped Babers in musing about who might be a good replacement for former WMU head coach Bill Cubit, assuming Illinois wants to make a change after this season.

I don't buy it, though. I think Babers has more to prove here, at least at this point. (Maybe things will look differently in December.)

P.J. Fleck makes a bit more sense to me. He has really made progress in Kalamazoo.
