Matt Johnson CAN apply for medical redshirt
Matt Johnson CAN apply for medical redshirt
We've had this discussion several times over the last year and a half, but today in the presser, one of the reporters finally asked Babers about it (thanks to whoever that guy was because so many of us wished someone would simply ask the damn question). As expected, Babers sort of danced around the question before finally answering it, but he said "Matt can apply for a medical redshirt" which is what I expected all along. Now, that said, it doesn't mean he'll one, be granted one, or two, even apply for one. But one would have to believe he'll probably apply for one at least. Now as for whether or not he'll be awarded one.....you know his that goes with the NCAA. But based on it happening in game one, I feel he has a good chance at being awarded it. I'd LOVE to see him back one more year! Sure would be nice getting a crack at Ohio State with him!

Who wouldn't want to see MattyJ lead this team into the horseshoe next season?
Re: Matt Johnson CAN apply for medical redshirt
I can think of 105,000 people, a coaching staff and 95% of the population of Ohio that follows college football that wouldn't.ZuluWarrior wrote:Who wouldn't want to see MattyJ lead this team into the horseshoe next season?

The pessimistic attitude I have says it won't happen but if he gets a 6th year look the #### out. Lewis , dieter, redding, moore and whoever else develops, good frickin luck. I don't know if we'll be able to stop the Bucks but they won't be able to stop us. They'll need the homer job Tennessee received.
Re: Matt Johnson CAN apply for medical redshirt
Johnson - QB
Coppett - RB
Lewis, Deiter, Moore, Miller, Redding, Rhodes - WR
8 of 10 OL return from the 2 deep.
The defense will have to replace a bunch of guys. But, that is a top 10-15 offense and a team that could get into the access bowl.

The important question at this point is (and I hope someone asks him)...
Does Matt want to come back?
Does Matt want to come back?

Hate to be the one to throw the turd in the punch bowl, but another scenario:
Is granted the exception, graduates and transfers to a P-5 school for his final year.

Kind of like Eilar Hardy, but in reverse? i suppose anything is possible, but for this to make any sense at all for Matt, he would need to transfer to Baylor (or Tulsa, I suppose). Otherwise, he would have to learn an entirely new offense.Lord_Byron wrote:Hate to be the one to throw the turd in the punch bowl, but another scenario:

I don't know if the concern was could he apply...you can apply for a lot of stuff you probably won't get...the issue is does he want to and is he likely to have one granted.
i don't think he'd transfer....then again, if Dino lands a P5 gig and MJ wants to make a splash in a P5 conference to enhance his NFL prospects...who knows?

Great point. Babers seemed to be chuckling a bit in his answer. Maybe he is chuckling because it is unlikely.Flipper wrote:I don't know if the concern was could he apply...you can apply for a lot of stuff you probably won't get...
(I don't know happen to know whether it is or it isn't. The fact that we haven't already heard about an application from Johnson suggests that a medical redshirt may be unlikely to be granted. But I'm just reading tea leaves there.)
Re: Matt Johnson CAN apply for medical redshirt
I hardly think Matt would ever do that to his teammates or the university. In recent years the MAC has had a #1 overall draft pick and the #5 overall pick in addition to dozens of other players who are now thriving in the league. Plus, Jimmy Garoppolo was recently selected by New England in the second round from Eastern Illinois of all places.
The need to play at or transfer to a "P5" school as a pathway to professional stardom is a discredited notion peddled (rather pathetically) by those schools desperate to make up for evaluations they whiffed on initially.

We didn't hear about Bryan Thomas until after the season. Was he even with the team in the spring before being granted a 6th year? There's really no rhyme or reason how these things get granted.Schadenfreude wrote:Great point. Babers seemed to be chuckling a bit in his answer. Re: Matt Johnson CAN apply for medical redshirt
There was some talk by some in other threads about it that he couldn't even apply for one, that his clock was up on his 5 years to play 4. Simply posted it to show he could apply and that it was finally brought up.Flipper wrote:I don't know if the concern was could he apply...you can apply for a lot of stuff you probably won't get...the issue is does he want to and is he likely to have one granted.

Listened to the coaches show last night and Dino mentioned that Matt has graduated and is working on his masters. Not sure how that would effect his decision to apply for a 6th year, just wanted to throw that out there

Why are we talking about the future and not just enjoying the present. Can we please finish this season before we talk about next year? This thread is pointless!
Typical pessimistic attitude coming from Kdog27. Saying goodbye to players long before they are gone.
