Western Michigan wins the West
  • Scenario #1: The Broncos win out.

How it plays out: This is the easiest to define. WMU would be 7-1 and their West counterparts would all have at least two losses.
Northern Illinois wins the West
  • Scenario #1: The Huskies win out

How it plays out: At best, if Toledo wins out, then we have a tie at 7-1, but NIU has the head-to-head tiebreaker. Otherwise, you have a 7-1 champion over 6-2 teams

Scenario #2: NIU beats WMU, loses to Ohio, Toledo loses a game

How it plays out: With wins over both the Broncos and Rockets, it wouldn't matter how the tie-breakers shook out. With CMU, their combined head-to-head would be good enough to keep them alive for the 2nd round to face the WMU/UT winner (which they'd have the head-to-head win).
Toledo wins the West
  • Scenario #1: Toledo beats BG and WMU. NIU loses to either WMU or Ohio

How it plays out: Toledo winning out minimizes tiebreakers. With a match-up to down WMU, they'd either need the Broncos to beat the Huskies or have Ohio try to peg them for a loss. Toledo is 7-1 and WMU and NIU are two (or more) loss teams.

Scenario #2: Toledo beats WMU. WMU beats NIU. Toledo loses to BG, NIU loses to Ohio

How it plays out: Similar to the prior one, just with a 6-2 tiebreaker. This could include CMU (who both WMU and UT would have wins over and thus advance to a head-to-head tiebreaker).

Scenario #3: NIU loses to WMU, WMU loses to UT, UT loses to BG, NIU beats Ohio

How it plays out: This one is a doozy. WMU, NIU, and UT would all be 6-2 with 1-1 records against each other. NIU drops out in the tie-breakers in one of two ways: (1) if CMU is involved, their combined head-to-head drops to 1-2 or (2) if CMU isn't involved, it goes to the West record, which NIU would have a 3-2 mark against the division. Either way, the tiebreaker then goes to the WMU/UT head-to-head which UT wins.

Makes my head spin just thinking about it! Good for the MAC, though. Very exciting race to the title game and very happy our ticket is already punched.
