Sit Matty J and Roger Lewis @ Ball St.

Post by slashba33 »

Given what I saw last night at the game, Roger Lewis is maybe 75% right now and needs to get healthy. A healthy Lewis is worth 2 TDs minimum for us weather scoring himself or drawing coverage over the top leaving someone else open.

Matty took way too many hits last night and we certainly CANNOT lose him to compete in the MACC and a bowl game.

We can beat Ball St. without either of them to get them/keep them fresh for Detroit.

Matt Johnson will be playing in his final regular season game next week. After not playing last year and with this his last regular season game he will probably not even want to come out in the 4th quarter. Plus he will pass Ben Roethlisberger as the MAC career leading for a season. As far as Lewis, I'm surprised he played last night after we were down by 17. He should have sat last night but no way will Johnson sit against Ball State

If I was Coach Babers I would split the difference. Play all the starters during the first half and then see how things look. I do want the win, but if there are things the team can be working on to prepare for the likely MAC title game opponent, then that should be the focus. Perhaps part of that means resting starters during the second half (or even the whole game if they are injured).

This is a confusing situation for the coaching staff. This game against Ball State means virtually nil in the big scheme of things, so if they feel they need to rest guys, especially late in the game if its getting out of hand score wise, then I have no problem with that. That being said, after a performance like last night, you want to play your guys and get them back into some positive rhythm and momentum.

The plan should be to play all out for at least a half, get a bunch of scoring drives and plays so guys are feeling good about themselves again, and then assess who might need some rest.
