Bowling Green outside receivers coach Andrew Sowder no longer on staff. Sounded as if he and Mike Jinks simply weren't on the same page.

Coach Sowder took a powder
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: Coach Sowder took a powder
That is quite a bummer for several reasons. First, having consistency in the coaching staff would have been nice. Sowder was one of few holdovers from the previous staff. Second, Sowder developed Roger Lewis and Gehrig Deiter into the players that they are. His track record is very good and whoever hires him will be getting a good one. And third, after the bar incident, we did not want another staff shakeup. Now we need to either find a new outside receivers coach or have a reassignment in the middle of the summer when coaching staffs are pretty set.
Given the news I am wondering if this is a sign that the offense will be using the slot receivers more and outside receivers less than the last two years.

This must have happened in the not so distant past as his name has been removed from the coaches list. Still wonder what is going to happen with the other coaches.
Re: Coach Sowder took a powder
Whatever happened with the situation involving the d-line coach and the GA? I found it off that the GA was hired to work with the offensive line after being a running back in college and having no coaching experience. His brother remained committed to Toledo of all places after he was brought on.
Jinks is doing a tremendous job so far with the team and building in-roads in recruiting but hiring and managing a staff is absolutely crucial at this level.

Seth Doege has been promoted to Sowder's vacant position.

Re: Coach Sowder took a powder
We must have the most inexperienced staff in the country......and its not even close.
Jinks (HC) - Never been a head coach. 3 years of college experience.
Eliano (DC) - Never been a DC, but has the most college experience on the staff.
Kilmer (Co OC)- Never been an OC. Never been a position coach.
Brock (SP Teams Coord) - Never been a Coordinator. NAIA position coach experience
Padron (Co OC) - Divison III experience
White (DL) - NAIA position coach experience
Morrison (LB) - Never been a position coach
Mickens (CB) - One of the more experienced coaches. Has made several stops as a D1 position coach.
Doege (WR) - Never coached before.
Hamby (OL) - Never been a position coach.
Not saying this is bad. Just pointing it out. The staff will recruit well, as it has been.
Clawson and Babers staff were loaded with assistant coaches who were very successful at the FCS level and had guys mixed in who had a lot of FBS experience as well. And as we know, both Clawson and Babers had already had successful runs as head coaches at previous schools.

It's interesting too having a brand new coach who wasn't hired by our brand new AD....not a dynamic you see very often.

Hard to say this is bad at this point, but it certainly is concerning.FalconFrenzy1994 wrote:We must have the most inexperienced staff in the country......and its not even close.

I'll take the staff that can recruit like crazy but is still developing the coaching aspect over a staff that can't recruit but gets the most out of the horrible players they get (although it's never as black and white as that). Probably going to need to be patient on the in-game strategy/adjustments. As long as they learn from mistakes and don't commit the same ones repeatedly. But all of that is yet to be seen. Who knows? Maybe they are all Mensa members and will be just fine.
Re: Coach Sowder took a powder
They are recruiting very well. Obviously we have no idea how they will be in game. The new OC Padron is one to keep an eye on - great D3 experience so hard telling how he will do in the chess match against experienced defensive coordinators.
I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt because they are recruiting well so far and because I have liked what I've heard in interviews. And honestly, this staff looks a lot like Dave Doeren's at NIU. If I remember my facts correctly, he was the head coach at NIU for two years and won 2 MAC championships and got his team to the Orange Bowl. So no need for warning alarms. Just sit back and enjoy the team.

Coach Sowder is now the OC at San Jose St., the youngest assistant coach in FBS.
