OMG. CMU stuns #20 Oklahoma State

Post by gmartin »

OMG!!! Best hail marry finish I ever seen.....

CMU beat OK State on a 53 yard Hail Mary and tip, and then run all the way across the field and dove into the end zone. Wow. Great win for CMU.

The game should have been over. There was a penalty as time expires and they gave CMU an untimed down. Refs messed up. Shouldn't have been another play. Wow!!! Refs screwed up and CMU took advantage.

MAC will go 2-0 vs Big 12 today. Not bad.

Already talk of OSU filing a complaint with the NCAA about the untimed down.

Interesting, the referee crew was a MAC crew. They have already apologized to Oklahoma State that they made a mistake and the last place should never have happened.

And the replay booth were Big 12 officials. It was reviewable as a mis-application of timing rules. They could have stopped the play.

The MAC today have suspended the entire officiating crew for the next two games. The Big 12 also suspended the replay personnel for 2 games. You would think out of 10 people, somebody would know the correct rule. An intentional ground penalty after time has elapsed is the only penalty that does not extend the game. I certainly wasn't aware of the rule, I thought no game could end on a penalty. If this is the only penalty that doesn't extend a game you would think the officials would know that rule.

This rule reminds me of the short-lived kick-off rule where the clock started when the ball was kicked instead of when the ball was fielded. Teams that could not kick the ball through the end-zone would deliberately kick the ball out of bounds to take a few seconds off the clock.

Why didn't Gundy have the QB run ten or twenty yards behind the LOS and then drop to a knee after four seconds? I've seen punters run the length of an end-zone to run a few seconds off a clock before they stepped back to offer a safety. I've seen players run parallel to the end zone in the final seconds of a game to burn a few seconds off the clock.

Even the OSU coaching staff did not know the rule.

I was glad to hear that some talking head on ESPN was thinking about how changing the result of the game would have a negative impact on the CFP. To change that game would be the totally wrong thing to do. If CMU goes undefeated the rest of the way, to have had this game turned to a loss because the officials blew the rule, would cast a black mark on the CFP selection process.

That is a silly rule. So instead of running out the back of endzone for a safety teams should run around and then intentionally ground it/ throw it in to ground not passing line of scrimmage??

As long as the officials know the rule book ;)

The rule makes sense. If the grounding takes place with time on the clock, spot foul, loss of down. If fourth down, defense takes over with another play.

If grounding happens after the clock expires, defense gets the same result as if they had sacked the quarterback with no time left. Game over.

No reason to give the defense an extra advantage they would not have otherwise gotten in the normal course of the game.

Except it takes away the defense's chance at forcing a fumble with the sack.

. . . and run the fumble back for a touchdown. Recovering a fumble after time has expired does nothing for them.
