MAC championship game

Post by Falco_peregrinusana »

I had a chance to go to the Western-Akron game between the class of the MAC best and the class of the MAC least. It looked like Alabama vs. Florida Tech. The conference may want to schedule this game for Saturday morning at, say, 1:00 am to protect younger viewers from gratuitous violence... :axe:

Akron the class of the East? Akron won't be in the MACC, Ohio will. It'll be Ohio vs either WMU or UT. I'm hoping for WMU. On paper it'll be a mismatch. But the beauty of the MACC is sometimes strange things happen. Look no further than 2013 when a undefeated and nationally-ranked Northern Illinois team playing for a BCS bowl lost to little old BG. Or how about a ranked Nate Davis-led Ball State team that lost to Buffalo in 2008. Or when boring Miami upset NIU in 2010. And who can forget when Akron beat NIU with a deep TD with :11 seconds left in 2005. Point being - whoever the West team is will be favored. But they still need to show up and play. If it's WMU, the distractions that BG faced about will Clawson or Babers be leaving won't even compare to what WMU is going to deal with concerning Fleck's status. It's why you play the game.

We'll see about Akron/Ohio. I think that Akron's defense is spotty but I also think that Ohio is too one dimensional on offense. You are certainly right about the MACC - it has seen its fair share of upsets, but in a lot of cases, there was not a previous matchup. I hope the game will be competitve.

I don't think it matters who represents the East. WMU is CLEARLY the class of the MAC this year. Ohio should win the East and I'm not sold on Akron.

I think the Broncos are on a mission to grab a NYD bowl. They are that good...thank God we played them last year.

There could be a rematch in the MACC if it's Akron vs WMU or Ohio vs Toledo as those teams will play in the regular season. But I think it's going to be a fresh matchup between WMU and Ohio. At this point with BG all but dead in the water, I'm really hoping WMU can win out and represent the MAC. BG ruined NIU's dream season a few years ago. It would be very disappointing to see WMU get to the MACC and have Ohio or Akron spoil it. But WMU still has the tougher path than whoever comes out of the East to get to Detroit with still having to play Toledo.

I agree that WMU is the best team and certainly looks the part, but that MACC has turned some heavily favored teams on its head in those examples above. It seems like whoever the favored team is coming into it has to deal with all kinds of distractions about their coach leaving, which opens the door for the underdogs to just go out and play hard. Ball State had those distractions with Hoke and lost, NIU has had those distractions essentially the last 5-6 years and split (3-3), Kent State had them in 2012 with Hazell (lost), and BG had them with Clawson and Babers. Fortunately for BG, we won in 2013 and 2015 before immediately losing our coach. But I remember last year leading up to that game it seem like we were talking way, way more about Barbers' situation then we were the game or the opponent itself.

I was talking to my dad at the game about the same thing... I would be good for the league if Western could qualify for a big time bowl and, dare I say, win it. The money would be nice for each team too. It would be such a pity if some power 5 school and their conference would have to miss out on a few million dollars. If I am correct, the Broncos would qualify if they are the highest ranking non-power 5 team.. is that correct?? They have to ranked in the top 15 too??

I don't think a Top 15 ranking is required, but I could be wrong.

Not anymore. The G5 gets one team in for sure now.

Haven't to finish higher than Houston and Boise. I can't see anyone else coming even close to qualifying except maybe Navy.

Terry Bowen and his Akron Zips played Western in front of a pathetic crowd in Akron Saturday. He is not getting it done there and I for one will be surprised if he last much longer. What he has in his favor is the fact his team plays in the MAC East, which, as we all know, seem to be a band poor poor teams.

They don't even have to finish higher than Houston at this point. The top ranked G5 CONFERENCE CHAMPION gets in. Houston's going to need a lot of help even to get to their conference championship game at this point. Navy has to lose twice for Houston to have a shot.
