Mike Jinks learned some 1st-year lessons at BG
http://www.sent-trib.com/sports/mike-ji ... 6623f.html
The biggest thing that sticks out to me is he couldn't bring anybody from his P5 background to be an assistant because of pay. Wasn't it obvious to Kingston that getting a coach from the FCS level is a better fit for this reason. I was at the old Clazel the night Baber introduced his staff and first recruiting class and then again at the Stroh for a season ticket party. He was excited coming to BG with better facilities and a city with more restaurants. It's easy going up than going down - just the reality.
Hope last year was the learning curve and he can get it turned around.

Very good article and in all honesty, I think many of us right here on this board saw and knew this was the case with our own two eyes after what we all witnessed. Often we come to this board and either share excitement or jointly complain about the good and bad. But often, we really don't know what goes on behind the scenes. That said, I think this year was different and much more transparent and if there has ever been a year where we had a great feel for the pulse of what was going on with this team, this would've been that year.

That's a very interesting article. A lot of new information there. Jinks seemed to be pretty open about the way he is looking back on the past year. I do appreciate that. Many coaches would not be that open with the media about where they think they could have done better.
I'm interested to see what he can accomplish here in the next month or two and then see what we have going forward.

Appreciate Jinks' candor. Certainly wouldn't get that honesty from a Dino Babers or maybe even a Dave Clawson. I do think coaches sticking around to help with their previous school's bowl game is garbage. No one in the working realm hangs around with a previous employer longer than they have to once they've taken another position. Time and resources need to be given to the new gig as soon as possible since you signed an agreement.
We'll see if Jinks can put his money where his mouth is next year. If nothing changes then this was all talk. One imagines the staff will improve since there's nowhere to go but up, but we'll see. I don't fault Jinks for taking this job because anyone would do what's best for their personal situation, but Kingston really screwed the pooch on making this decision.

He could have hired people not from the Big 12 and people he didn't know prior to his hiring.

I'm mixed on this topic...I think Jinks will be fine here eventually...will it be in year 2-3-4? Who knows. I remain pissed at Kingston for going so far out of the box on this hire..to the point of not really considering anyone else... when he was half way out the door.

I thought it was a good article and appreciate Coach Jinks talking openly about the mistakes he and the staff made and what they can do better.
His recruiting has been pretty solid so far. We will find out if he can be successful here soon enough. This article seems pretty positive.

Yeah listening to Kingston's interview on the hiring process, it was impressive but I had an issue. He was so fixated on hiring a Texas Tech guy in order to keep similar to the already in place system. He knew where he was going before the process began.
My background is in forensics and with that you learn law enforcement approaches to investigations. I learned that hunches are dangerous because once you have a hunch, you only see evidence which backs your hunch. You need an open mind at all steps of the investigation. That mindset is why something about the hiring process and the quick turnaround sat uneasy with me.

The difference is that this "crime" has happened many times before and you can even watch it on tape to see if your thoughts are correct.
Re: Mike Jinks learned some 1st-year lessons at BG
The "crime" is someone was paid 500k for that season.

So we know we need more veteran coaches. Why not scour the firings around the country and see if we can add a coach that is interested in a new spot?

Why is the world was he let go? Was he connected to the Wakeyleaks issue?Globetrotter wrote:So we know we need more veteran coaches. Why not scour the firings around the country and see if we can add a coach that is interested in a new spot?

Re: Mike Jinks learned some 1st-year lessons at BG
A friend there (I used to work in Wake athletics) tells me that he wasn't let go, but that it really was a mutual thing (which judging from his twitter, surprises me). My guess is that he wants to move up and out of the ST role and there wasn't a place for him to do that at WF.footballguy51 wrote:Why is the world was he let go?
