P5 Coaches Salaries

Post by gmartin »

Nick Saban signed a new contract yesterday and with the signing bonus and endorsements he is the highest paid coach as well as STATE employee for the state of Alabama. It's reported that Saban generates over 150 million dollars each year for the university. So his salary is a bargain for what he generates.

The one thing that caught my attention is the linebackers coach at Alabama, his yearly salary is $950,000. A linebacker coach making 2x what a MAC coach makes. Heck, the strength and conditioning coach at Alabama makes $550,000.

Heck Michigan has 3 Assistant Coaches making $1 million a year. Now two are the offensive and defensive coordinators and the third is something called the passing game coordinator. Heck I thought that was Harbaugh. Since he's the next thing closest to God coaching College Football, you'd think he could just pay himself that extra $1 million or $2 millions and just let the D guys fight it out for the scraps.

I wish there was something more that could be done to help pay our coaches. Half the reason they leave is for a huge pay bump. I just wish we could retain a coach longer than half a decade before they decided to jump. If we had more cash to throw at them, maybe they would give it a second thought.

Oh, well. We'll do our best to win with what we've got. That's kind of our thing, anyway.

Between salaries and facilities, college football is a total arms race. I love the sport but I'm the first to say it has gotten too big. Much of why I love the MAC is it remains a local football feel.

I agree with you on that. However, if Saban is bringing in 150 million per season at Alabama then his 11 million salary is a wise investment. Curious to see the revenue Harbough has generated up at Michigan vs what Brady Hoke generated. Season tickets are up, ticket prices are up. Merchandise sales and marketing spots are up. I bet Harbough has generated close to if not over 100 million. Once again wise investment. Roughly Michigan and Alabama is paying its entire coaching staff about 15-17% of total revenue generated. Wonder how BG fares. If Jinx and his staff combined pull in salaries totalling 1.5 million, I have no idea how much combined the assistance make, but if BG budget is 1.5 million on entire staff, at 18%, is BG creating revenue of almost 9 million a season.

How much revenue does BG football generate. There's the tackling dummy games that we get paid...I think...right around $750k. Add in our home ticket sales...add in football specific merch...add in home game tickets...add in cable rights. If we break $6-7 mil I'd be shocked. I would also think that revenue is stable no matter who coaches here because so much of it is from tackling dummy games and ESPN.

Given the fact that we're a gateway job...and always will be a gateway job...I have a hard time justifying paying $500k for a HC much less more. You can live like a king around here for a fraction of $500k. DIno made 170K at EIU...paid him 2.5 times that to come here for two years and babysit the team Clawson built before bolting to Syracuse. I think we overpaid him to do that by a good bit.

Agreed, can't stand this mentality of well, we'll pay him 500k and 5 years because that's what all the other schools in the MAC are doing. Jinks didn't have the qualifications for that kind of salary either but joe blow at Kent makes it so here you go.

I find it just as ridiculous that a position coach at Alabama makes that kind of money. Put that money back into the school.

Alabama is a state funded school. That's why they said Saban is also the highest state employee because the state pays the coaches salary.

His salary is actually only $245,000.

It's that talent fee that nets him the huge part of his paycheck. And don't forget that completion clause in his contract that nets him another $400,000 if he is Alabama's head coach as of the date of its final football game of each contract year, not including any postseason game or games.
------

Dino made the following at BGSU

2015 - $482,080
2014 - $413,846

His salary increase for one year was more than my entire salary :(

We did get paid 1.2 million by Tennessee since it was last minute so I'm assuming when we play very large schools were getting 1 million dollars. I know we can't compete against power 5 schools in salaries, but we can't lose coaches to schools like Tulsa.

At least we have one of the lowest student subsidy percentages for athletic departments in the MAC unlike Eastern who has over 80%.

I've been following BG sports since disco was popular the first time around...when Rex Smith was an up and coming star and boinking Brooke Shields would get you time in prison.

We've never lost a coach to a program on the level of a Tulsa....even when we were paying guys the least amount of jack of any D1 program. But the..that only covers Stolz through Dino...so small sample size. I guess it could happen...

I think if we lose them we lose them. If Jinks is a winner this year...his name will come up for vacancies elsewhere. It's where we are.

OSU paid us $800k...but the tacking dummy game $$$ are rising. UM is paying WMU $1.2 mil to come there in 2012. That's a 2.5 hour bus ride down 94 on Friday with a one night stay. WMU will make a ton off of that

John Wagner says 1,200,000 for Ohio State in 2020.

Interesting note here -- http://www.fbschedules.com/2016/02/bowl ... th-dakota/" target="_blank
BG gets 1,000,000 to play Illinois and will pay South Dakota 375,000 for 2 more games

http://www.fbschedules.com/2016/08/tenn ... schedules/" target="_blank
Tennessee paying us 1,500,000 in 2021

Just a few I could find easily. We've been getting 1,000,000+ for awhile. I think as far back as the game at Florida at least.

Wonder how much we're getting from Nortwestern. Thinking this could be a 2 for 1 game. Better still, a home and home. (Didn't Minn. do this several yrs ago?)

I wish it was a two-for-one. I don't think it is. I think it is one-and-done.

Yes, Minnesota played at our place, as did Indiana. Maryland will soon. I really hope we can find a way to keep setting those games once in a while.
