Antwuan Johnson

Post by bowlgreen »

Newest 2018 commit Antwuan Johnson chose Bowling Green over Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisville, Syracuse and Michigan. What Jenks' staff is doing in the world of recruiting is unprecedented for a MAC school.

Wow, I remember when I saw that BG had an offer out to this guy I was thinking BG had no shot to get him because of his other offers. Great close by the staff.

I love the level we are recruiting at. Now, I hope we see it translate onto the field.

Here's why I love Coach Jinks already...

1) Recruiting is off the charts.
2) Brutally honest and takes accountability. Realized he made lots of mistakes in his first year and will grow from that.
3) He gets the importance of beating tsun. Clawson, and especially Babers, didn't put enough emphasis on this game.
4) His fire and passion

33 days and counting....bring on Sparty.

Before we put the cart in front of the horse with these recruiting prospects, let's not forget, these are simply verbal commitments, these kids have not signed yet an NLI and can't for a few more months. The early signing period this year could help keep us from losing guys late as we have happen every year (we've also already lost a few verbal commitments this year as well). But yes, I do agree with what everyone is saying, I do really like the caliber of recruits we are targeting and getting interest from. Now, the bigger issue is keeping them on board between now and signing day and to sign with BG. Keep up the good work coaches.

Seems to me the calendar just changes. Coaches are always going to try to poach each other. It will just happen in December instead of (or as as well as?) in February.

But our class sure looks good right now.

While yes the calendar is moving up, there will be some kids who have to make a decision that will benefit BG. For example if you are a 3* guy and have an offer from BGSU, but a P5 coach has said "maybe" there will be an offer come February. Do you pull the trigger on the gaurentee from BG or hope the P5 offer comes through? Ideally some of these guys will pull the trigger on BG and that allow us to maintain many of these highly rated guys.

Two Thoughts...
1) YES, we are going to lose someone. Central Michigan is not. Why? Because teams like Central Michigan don't have any players good enough to be poached.

2) BUT, alot of these guys have already turned down big time programs. It's not like all their offers were MAC schools. So the likelihood of losing alot of them is highly, highly unlikely.

It is important for the team to play well this season. If the season goes south, several of these guys will jump ship and the class won't look quite is good.
They need to find a way to get better QB play to have a chance. The defense is going to struggle against any decent offense, so BG is going to have to convert some 3rd downs. You can be run first against the MAC East, but you aren't going to beat any above .500 programs playing that way with our D.
Love to see some improvement this year, but I don't think there will be much.

As mentioned no matter when the signing period is schools are always going to swoop in and try to flip good recruits and prospects when they need to address a deficiency.

I like coach Jinks a lot...I think he and Huger are both going to take their programs to the top....whatever that is these days...but let's not go overboard. PJ Fleck recruited better than any MAC coach I've ever seen. Was he a douche? Sure...but he sure could recruit.

Another thing about these *** kids. Way more kids get *** nowadays than back in the early days of internet recruiting coverage. I'm talking 9600 baud modem days on AOL (You've got mail!!!)

I initially thought "***" meant that you were swearing. While I agree with everything you said, I'm going to pretend that you were indeed swearing when you said "these *** kids" -- it goes hand in hand with "back in our day we had 9600 baud modems, and we LIKED it that way"
