Joseph Davidson

Post by Class of 61 »

Anyone hear or see anything on how Joseph Davidson did at the combine last week?
I know the punters didn't get the same publicity as regular positions. But I was hoping to hear hopefully good news on his workout.

Joe had a John Deere Combine. It went about 15mph. He left some corn in the fields. Oh wait, wrong combine. Has anyone met Joe. I have and he reminds me of Ricky, from the movie, Blue Chips.

It's hard to tell if anybody will pick up Joe. There just isn't too much turnover in the NFL for punters. The Colts could sure use him. The Lions could too. I think both those teams averaged just over 41 yards per kick.

Based on the combine website, he did not participate in any of the drills for measurables. I'm not sure if any of those things actually matter for punters or not.

Here is his combine page: https://www.nfl.com/prospects/joseph-da ... 37b88a3b97

What do players do at the combine besides the workouts?

Well each player can have up to a 15 minute interview with all 32 teams. So that would mean 8 hours of non-stop interviews.
There is also a drug test.
A physical and injury evaluation.
Measurements, including shoe size and hand size.
Cybex and Wunderlich tests.

Punters
6 punts down the middle of the field for distance (teams also chart hang time for all kicks)
3 directional punts to the right sideline
3 directional punts to the left sideline
3 “pooch” punts to place the ball as close to the goal line as possible

The Philadelphia Eagles punter announced his retirement from football. Maybe Davidson will get a chance with Philly.

Don't count on ever seeing them. Very few media members are actually allowed in the stadium for the workouts, they're generally watching on TV and only in town for the networking/league scuttlebutt reporting. And obviously NFL Network isn't showing or talking about punting results.

The non-public stuff we ever hear about (wonderlick, how kids did in interviews, etc) all comes from "leaks", and I cannot fathom any media members wasting their contacts by asking about punters.

Interesting take on punters from Peter King's (OU '79) column in today's SI.com:

6. I think the Marquette King cut by the Raiders was stunning—he’s one of the top five punters in the NFL—until you realize the cash-strapped Raiders can save $2.9 million in cap money this year. I think GM Reggie McKenzie figures, and probably correctly, that of all the moves he could make, cutting the punter and paying a young punter the NFL minimum is the best of some bad alternatives.

Davidson was not drafted, but he received a rookie mini-camp invite from the Arizona Cardinals.

Teo Redding signed as a UDFA with the Lions, and Ryan Hunter did the same with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Arizona signed P Andy Lee to a two-year contract extension through the 2020 season. Joe will have to look good in camp/preseason to get a look from another team. Tough when there are only 32 such jobs in the world.
