Spring game reports

Post by MarkL »

Spring game starts in 2 hours at the fieldhouse. Would love to hear reports. Specifically, how is the defense, how is Doege, does the team look like it is muscular enough to compete consistently?
Jinks seemed to wisely set expectations low - he said the team is still a work in progress. Last year at this time I said we should go 6-6 or something close, and we all know how that went. I would like to think better at this time so any reports would be helpful in evaluating.

Reports from Twitter were the D made some nice plays and the team was able to get enough work done. hard to really have a spring game in the field house. 140 days til kickoff...

The abbreviated game benefitted the team, but it also served to connect the families and student-athletes at this point late in the semester. Excellent crowd of family, friends, area coaches and recruits.

Offensively, the scrimmage showcased Doege for a couple of series. Scotty Miller can play- we knew that. Andrew Clair can play- we knew that. We know Q Morris can play- sitting out for rest of spring. We had some young or back up guys do some things like Denley, Pough and Clater. OL- missing the two expected starters Labus and Taborn for spring- certainly is deeper than it has been for years. Now finding the seven or eight best guys with five cohesive starters and two or three key back ups will be important.

Defensively, we did seem to be moving better and closing in the back end. Again, we know Harris can play. Perce and Coleman are fierce hitters who need to translate that to field in Sept. Bozeman not yet back. Gregory to me has taken a step forward. DL we again know what we get from Junior and Kono. But we will need others to get going as we are still needing size and strength. Croslen now has experience to build on.

N Needham looks more comfortable at PK. Searching for punter.

Plenty of work left to do everywhere. Everywhere. Starting in the next two practices where there will be a lot of reps.

Two NFL possibles watched from sideline. Will see where Davidson and Redding end up for their shot. Hunter will be an early CFL pick. And Roger Lewis never disappoints when he returns to town. Really understands the opportunity he received here and the relationships established. He spent quite a bit of time post practice with some of our WRs- physical- and mental- tips.

Go Falcons!

Great reports. Much appreciated. How did the defensive line look?

So the way the scoring went is the defense started up 27-0. The combined first and second offense has to score 28 to win against first and second defense. There were four ten minute running clock quarters.
I would bet first and second offense each only had time for about four drives. So for the offense to win, they would have to score TDs on half of all possessions.
And btw. I like the novel scoring idea.

The abbreviated game benefited the team, but it also served to connect the families and student-athletes. Great crowd, and I would say standing room only, because I got to the game late. I did not see much pass offense, but short pass completions. Is all of the wide out back from injuries and who did not play? The only deep ball hit the nets that I saw.

Defensive line put pressure on the QB from what I saw. Short passes and quick stops. I did not see any familiar DBs out there. What happen to Stephens, Milton, and Jefferes? Are they still on the team?

Nice crowd, and hard to tell how much growth from last year. I would say it was a great day for coach Jinks to see the fan support BGSU has. I'm just asking, for six win so I can go somewhere warm for a BGSU football game in December!

I'm assuming they held out the starting/upperclassmen defensive backs just to give the other guys some reps and to avoid injury. Milton, Stephens, Jeffries, Hale, and Gregory are all back from last year, and we're also adding newcomers Cedric Mitchell and James Harris Jr., as well as getting Jamari Bozeman off surgery, which he missed the whole year last year because of.

To me, the defensive backfield ought to be a strength of our team this year, as we have a ton of experience and talent in that unit, as well as some talented young guns.
