Blade: Inching away from BGSU coverage?

Post by Schadenfreude »

I see The Blade declined to send its Falcon beat writer to cover the Bowling Green football game in Eugene. Instead, they hired a local writer, Ron Richmond, to type up a story.

This is really disappointing. I can't remember a time when The Blade wouldn't send its own staff to cover Falcon road football games. (I distinctly remember Amy Ford covering the Falcons' upset win at Missouri in 1995, for example.)

For those who expect thorough coverage of BGSU sports from The Blade, this is a bad sign.

Piotrowicz is also covering the Buckeyes and was in Columbus yesterday. Unfortunately with Wagner retiring this is the way things are headed as newspapers keep hemorrhaging money.

The Blade is hosing BGSU here. Badly.

There is no way one man can properly cover two FBS football teams.

Since they didn't replace Wagner, they now have three college beat writers for four teams. So if you have to choose which 3 games to cover, it makes sense to hire someone to cover BG all the way in Oregon as opposed to Toledo and Ohio State at home and Michigan/Notre Dame. But if the tables are turned later in the year and they choose to stiff BG, then we have reason to rampage The Blade with pitchforks. For now, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that they have no money to hire a fourth college beat writer and will have to make tough decisions.

Thomas Schmeltz does an excellent job covering BG for the Sent-Trib. I'd make him my go to for BG athletics from now on.

Exactly...in these days of the internet, especially with twitter, the Blade is not only superfluous, but it's also unnecessary

A few years ago The Blade wrote they were losing $11 million per year. Of course, they make their money from TV stations and cable TV/internet.
