New direction

Wanted to throw out an idea. With the new chance to hire a staff and select a direction, I wonder if it might not be a good choice to not only hire a new coach but adapt to a new scheme. The spread helped mid majors compete with the major conference teams. It yielded gems in recruiting and diamonds in the rough. But over the years the spread is now so common it’s hard to find an advantage strategically and recruiting is now everyone looking for the same players. I think it would be interesting to zig while everyone else is zagging and to hire someone from the army, navy, or Georgia tech coaching tree. We constantly talk about our coaches being poached and not being able to build consistency. Most of the coaches from those institutions stay. The culture and discipline of those systems consistently are sustained. Moreover, those three teams are able to identify and find recruits others aren’t going after and that are tailor made for their system. And that system is not an easy system to prepar for. Just some food for thought. Go falcons.

I had a similar thought. Remember Georgia Southern in the bowl game a few years ago? It was a spread option that ran all day long. Once they take a lead, that is it. They chew the clock and kill any comeback attempt.
Of course GSU went winless or near winless last year so the system may not be perfect.

Dave Clawson had a nearly ideal resume. He rebuilt two different FCS programs.
An overemphasis on offensive schemes is part of how we ended up with Mike Jinks. Let's keep the big picture in mind: Is this coach a winner?
Clawson was a winner. Let's find the next Clawson.

While I agree completely. My point was more that we can find a person who could be that but I also would like someone who can build something that sustains and changes the revolving door at coach. And I feel like one reason there are a lot of ebbs and flows now for mid majors is recruiting is becoming very difficult when all teams are looking at the same types of people. But you are right a winner first. But I just would love to see a change in total direction.

Had we continued with the Babers philosophy and hired someone like Sean Lewis, the program looks way different today. There was a good thing going there and hitting the reset button was the worst possible thing to do.

If I had to predict it right now with absolutely no idea of what the AD is looking for and no criteria laid out, I would say Greg Studrawa.
Reason: when Moose was hired, the president said time and time and time again that Moose is an alum and he is coming home.
Stud apparently applied for the HC job in 2013 and 2015, and maybe also 2008. Stud is an alum and he wants to come home.
Not saying he's who I would pick. But he may be the pick.
Also I fully expect Pelini will get every chance to earn the job. He has a five week job interview in front of him.
That all said, in 2008 Christopher laid out his criteria. HC experience, program building experience, Ohio recruiting. He was very open about the whole thing. I hope Moose does the same, takes his time, and does this right.

He would be a heck of a candidate if he's interested.

I want Moose to find the right guy. Doesn't have to be an alum. Huger could be exhibit A on when hiring alums don't work out...

I’d take the next Clawson 100 times out of 100.

The closest thing to Clawson in the MAC right now is the coach at EMU. He is doing a great job. And he was hired right as Clawson built a team from the ashes to win the MAC. It can be done in this conference. You don't just have to hire a flashy offensive mind to win.
Any chance we can pry Chris Klieman out of North Dakota State? Craig Bohl left for Wyoming, so it would be the same sort of jump. Klieman has worked as far east as Iowa and his background prior to head coach at NDSU was defense. Just a thought.

My #1, Mike Houston, from James Madison. Won 2016 NC. Career winning percentage of .731.
Current salary is $391,000. Slam dunk hire if he would leave for an FBS job.

Probably can’t afford him. With supplemental pay Houston makes over $500,000 and has 9 years left on his contract. Yep, BG can’t afford an FCS coach.

#1 : Marcus Freeman
My pick or at least top two candidates would be: Marcus Freeman from the Univ. of Cincinnati. Current employed as Defense Coordinator Univ of Cincinnati.
Get him on the low side of the pay scale. Has ties to Ohio State, Purdue, Urban Myers, Luke Fickle. Strong recruiter in Ohio, PA and surrounding states.
Proven winner with every team that he has been associated with.
Current record with Fickle is 6-0.
Fickle may be leaving Cincinnati after this season as reported on ESPN. That means his staff would be looking to move.

Way too young. Way way way too young. Not ready for HC yet. But interesting thought.
