Listening in through Jordan Strack's twitter feed. Sounds like the Moosbrugger/Jinks conversation was pretty tense, and Moose says it was not funded by a private donor.

Pelini seems to be saying all the right things and despite what he implied, he's definitely treating it like a job interview (as he should).

I think the Ohio game will be very telling as to where the team stands.

My takes from the press conference

1) Have Moose do more press conferences. Bob likes to talk. He said way more than I would have. Did anyone catch him asking David (I assume Briggs) if he brought some checks?

2) Moose is confident in his ability to hire coaches. Now, keep the Kingston crew out of the room when the hire is made.

Seemed to me that donors may have been threatening to pull money out rather than funding a buyout. There had to have been some external force placing pressure on Moose and Rogers to pull the trigger now.

We can never know what kind of a college head coach a guy is going to be until he is one. Pelini has at least been one. His 5-15 record is not impressive but he did inherit a program that won only one 1 game the year before he was hired. The things I liked hearing from him a few different times were about how important it is to change the culture. When he discussed the last two games, which were both winnable, he said something to the effect that "not closing out games is unacceptable." I feel that strong words of condemnation have been lacking and I for one was encouraged to hear them spoken. I think young athletes most often give you only what's expected of them. Raise those expectations and then push them to pass those expectation and good things can happen. I've sensed a lack of demonstrated toughness and determination in these players. Not because they lack it but because they have not been pushed to exhibit it. Football is a game of passion and I think that passion starts with the head coach. Things were awful when Urban Meyer waked into this program and in very short order everybody knew there was a new sheriff in town. It's a fine line to walk. Kids won't follow you if they don't respect you, but if they see that you care and that your system is sound I think they will run through walls for you when you ask them to. I get the sense that Pelini is that type of head coach. We are in need of some no-nonsense, tell it like it is language coming from the head coach. With the quality players I see on this team, especially on the offensive side of the ball, I sense we are just missing that intangible aspect that a fiery and passionate head coach can bring. I don't think Mike Jinks was ever that guy. And that's not a knock on him; nobody can work outside his own personality. But I don't think its a quality that can be lacking in a successful college football coach.

Yep, several involved in the daily decisions of the department. Hired like Jinks, Jans, and the swimming coach by Chris Kingston. Thankfully industry standard isn't to give them 6 year contracts, yet.

Yes, I forgot to highlight this. When Moose said "I thought you had checks in hand for me, David," it was tense and uncomfortable. He wasn't joking around. He was pissed at David Briggs.

Didn't listen to the presser one bit, but if he was pissed at David Briggs, he needs to suck it up and realize he's in charge of a D1 athletics dept. I hope Briggs continues treating the dept like a real athletic department and holds them equally as accountable during basketball season.

If you cannot find the way to fund things and actually attempt to compete and win, then stop fielding the programs. IF you're going to field the programs then do what it takes to win. And part of fielding the programs is taking the heat/criticism. Be it fans or media, the criticism was beyond warranted. The program had been a complete dumpster fire for going on 3 seasons now. Briggs was well within his rights, if not his obligation, to write exactly the article that he did.

Let's hope he'll give the same passion to basketball. Mr. Briggs, don't let Moose being upset at you doing your job stop you from doing your job. Well earned kudos, AFAIC.

It's actually worth a listen. Moose didn't shy away from any questions and I felt had good answers. It was just the one question from Briggs where he let a little frustration slip through. It was also pretty clear he had made this decision a while ago but struggled with doing it now or after the season.

Maybe someday, the Athletic Department will figure out how to hand the reporters a microphone so you can actually hear the questions being asked.

I don't remember if it was at that moment, but Moose very directly expressed frustration to Briggs that boosters had popped off anonymously in his column about Mike Jinks in his column a week or two back. And I don't blame him for letting some frustration show about that.

Some newspapers would not have even let a sports columnist use anonymity that way. It's difficult enough getting criticized in a major newspaper, but when it isn't even clear who is doing it? I understand why Moosbrugger and Jinks both were unhappy. We just have to take Briggs's word for it that he did actually speak to big time boosters and not just a couple of small time complainers.

But, honestly, this isn't that big a deal. I certainly do not agree with hammb that this implies Moose isn't up to "taking the heat/criticism." If Moose was really that thin-skinned, he would not have openly wondered whether he himself should have stayed behind in Atlanta with Caleb Bright's family. That took some guts and honesty.

I thought Moose did a good job overall. This seems like normal give and take with the media.
