Any other Falcons about sick of the thought of the school located in Columbus trying to trademark the word THE

Very obnoxious but has no chance that I can see of succeeding.

When used with the rest of their name or part of their name I can understand but not the word alone. Imagine if BGSU did the same with the commonly used BG. It would make sense when used as in “BG Falcons” to have the combination protected not BG alone

From what I gathered, it's only trademarking THE when it is used in reference to OSU. There are a lot of unlicensed merchandise sellers out there trying to use it to make money off the likeness of OSU, and the university decided they weren't okay with that. I don't blame them for wanting a slice of the pie. Not that they need it (because they don't), but I know that if it was someone using my likeness to make money and I wasn't getting any of it, that would bother me.

Saying "The" Ohio State University is like truck nuts.

Love it or hate it...the phrase "The Ohio State University" is more or less their intellectual property. They have a right to protect their property via trademark

This. When you look at it from a licensing standpoint and all the counterfeit merchandise that's out there, it makes perfect sense. Probably 90 percent of the general population doesn't understand this, so they just assume it's pretentiousness. It's not. They are protecting a billion dollar investment, and anyone with a lick of common sense would want to do the same.

Honestly, I don't get the OSU envy/hatred on these boards, sometimes. What happens with OSU rarely impacts BG; and with the now forever link between the schools being Urban Meyer, I can only see future benefits for the BG program. Meyer has already done a number of things to help out BGSU, and I don't see that ever stopping.

Miami Hurricanes should trademark The U then.

Then I guess we should trademark "Talons Up".

Yes, sarcasm abounds in that comment.

My only point is this. They are not THE only state university in Ohio. They just happen to have Ohio in their name. Cry me a river on the money they are loosing through bootleg selling of hats with THE on the front.

You haven’t attending any BGSU/osu contests in Cow-bus or at the Ice Arena. Honestly, that brings hate to the surface easily. Ask other B10 schools who has the most hated fans, you might be surprised but I no longer am.

Try again. I live here in Columbus and have attended quite a few BG-OSU contests in football, basketball and hockey. There's no reason for it -- and of course OSU is hated in the Big 10...they win a lot at almost everything. Pick any fan base you like, and you'll find plenty of teams from other schools who can't stand them. It's a lame argument.

I am a Big 10 alum. And yes, OSU fans are hated the most. They were always the most obnoxious when they came to town. Not even close. Sure was fun whipping them at our stadium in 2009.
The Wisconsin folks were fun, Illinois and Minnesota were really nice. Michigan was down during my years so their fans were a little deflated but still nice.
Now I live away from Big 10 country so I don't deal with it anymore. Which I have to admit is nice.

Whether THE fans think this is true or not it’s a common perspective that results in the hate. THE fans like to argue that others’ perspective is wrong resulting in more hate.
