Doyt Perry Stadium video

Post by BGSU33 »

Below is a link for a new video I did of Perry Stadium. It's only 3 minutes long, but there are some new clips that I've incorporated in this one. I do a video like this once every couple years or so, and I always love seeing the improvements and upgrades made to the stadium with each passing year, so I like to try and showcase the improvements by putting something new and updated for others to see. There's a short intro to this video with a few campus shots like I normally do, but then it goes into the stadium shots with some pretty cool views to close out the video. You can also select the HD version to watch, which I suggest, because otherwise most of the shots will be blurry. If anyone cares to watch it, here's the link:

Thanks for posting this! The orange highlights throughout the stadium pop nicely. This is as good as the Doyt has looked in a long while.

Agreed on this presentation… but, as a longtime season ticket holder ( this yr 4 seats) , will we ever see the PINK seats replaced ? They are weather beaten and not very comfortable. I know they were replaced once before, but that was several yrs ago. That, along w/ handrails, should be a priority IMO, if we’re not going to do any major upgrades. =D>

Really nice video. Cannot wait to be back in the Doyt for football. I'm not able to make the home opener, but I'll definitely be in town for Homecoming on September 18th.

The old ball field looks good. The concrete is all painted now. It looks very nice.

This was the only thing I noticed, too. The pink is a little jarring next to all that on-brand orange. I imagine that BGSU is doing a little bit every year, and perhaps there is a plan in place to replace those seats.

While the stadium hasn’t had any major additions/renovations since the Sebo Center, I will say the other touches that have been done throughout the stadium are certainly noticeable and reflected. Even just the painting and sealing of the grandstands coupled with the flare of orange paint really make the venue pop. The recent replacement of the turf has a nice look as well. The only thing that is really missing and has the facility looking somewhat unfinished is the area behind the south end zone. Yes, they obviously put temporary things there for games, but it would really be fantastic to see something permanently functional added there to finish the stadium and close it in.

I saw some thing that Missouri Western did to their stadium that I thought was really cool, they built a pavilion/party deck that would allow us to still utilize this area similar to what we already do, but with a much better look and a permanent structure. I also thought it would be a fantastic place to finally build a mixed-use athletic department office building (to get them out of the very dated and cramped halls of the stadium), that featured a pavilion facing the field that could be utilized on game day. Yes, I know all of these ideas take money.

Many of our MAC peers have finished end zones now and have done things such as plazas (Miami, Kent State), grass berm and columns (Ball State), grass hillside (Ohio, Akron), and most of the other MAC schools have placed field houses, more end zone seating, football buildings, etc. (Toledo, NIU, WMU, CMU, UB, Ohio). This is where our stadium is lacking and looks very unfinished compared to our peers. If BG were to ever improve this area, it would really put Perry Stadium right up there in the MAC.

I'm with you if the funding can be found. I have no issues whatsoever using the south end zone as a Falcon Club party area and gift shop. I just wish they had it built out as a permanent structure. Most notably raise it up and tier the falcon club table section into multiple levels so that everybody hanging in there can still see the game without being obstructed from passers by.

It takes money, obviously, but would be a nice addition to the stadium and make it look so much nicer than just throwing up some tents in that endzone every week.

If I could suggest some changes to the stadium besides the obvious seat color.
- grass hill in the south end zone for family picnics. Perhaps also with some amount of hardscaping to give it a permanent look as suggested by 33 and hammb.
- a brick facade to each side of the stadium on the outside, also making a proper concourse. It gives the stadium a nice look if it appears like a building rather than a concrete shell. And also a more cohesive look with the Sebo center
- a proper memorial for the Cal Poly team and tribute to the Mercy Bowl, either at turf level or within the concourse.

And if the structure of the stadium becomes problematic given the freeze thaw cycle, build a new stadium right where the Doyt is in order to keep the Sebo center. Just dig it down about 20 feet to expose less concrete to the cold and wind. Easier to make a grass hill as the field would be underground and you need a transition to surface level. It would bring some natural wind barrier for the fans as only a small part of the stadium would be above ground. Perhaps easier on the structure as more concrete is below surface level but I'm not a civil engineer. And easier to build a facade because the height to build a facade is much shorter. I think it is UL Lafayette that has a stadium like this. Of course all this would be years off because I am unaware of any plans anytime in the future to replace the Doyt.

Extremely cost prohibitive to try going underground. I believe bedrock is around 10 feet or less in that area.

Good point. Students probably wouldn't care for the sound of blasting rock on campus.

Or we could let someone grow some rows of corn there and maybe park an antique tractor nearby.

Build a Dollar General behind the south end zone...it's going to come to that eventually anyway
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
