South Alabama
Hosts Southern Miss Saturday night. Keep an eye on this one if you can.
Murray State
Wiped out a bad Mississippi Valley State team 35-0. Ran for over 300, held MVSU to <200 total yards.
Minnesota
Played OSU tough. I listened to a prediction that OSU would be on upset alert going to Minnesota and I laughed it off. Minnesota gets back some significant players it was missing last year. Add that to a new starting QB for OSU and the first hostile road environment in two years and there's reason for upset alert. Turns out that was pretty close to true as Minnesota led much of the game and it wasn't until late third that it was a two possession game, and even then Minnesota hung tight. OSU scored on big explosive plays. Minnesota ran the ball well.
Kent State
Going to Texas A&M. Don't be susprise if Kent beats the spread.
Akron
Going to Auburn. Have mercy.
NIU
Going to Georgia Tech. GT is a program on the rise so it will be interesting to see if NIU beats the 19 point spread.
EMU
Plays St Francis tonight. St Francis hasn't played since 2019 - 6-6. EMU went 2-4 last year. They return almost everyone and nearly every game was 1 possession and of course EMU is well coached. EMU is easy pick for most improved team if you ask me.
Buffalo
Absolutely wiped out a terrible terrible terrible Wagner team. Wagner went 1-11 in 2019, 0-2 in 2021 spring. So nothing learned except that Buffalo can still run the ball well.
UT
Hosts Norfolk State. Haven't played since 2019 - 5-7. They wiped out the same Morgan State team we wiped out in 2019.
Miami
Goes to Cincinnati. 22.5 dogs. I bet they beat the spread. Cincinnati is a great team. Just don't think they're going to pour it on.
Ohio
Hosts Syracuse. I'd take Ohio.

Not an opponent but WMU got waxed by an average Michigan team this afternoon.

NIU eeked out a win against a bad GT team.
Kent hung with A&M for two and a half quarters.
Ohio looked pedestrian against Dino in Athens.
Miami got waxed by Cincy,
Akron embarrassed by Auburn.
South Alabama had a pretty decent showing against Southern Miss.

GT was supposed to be turning a corner this year. I didn't get to see the game so I'm not sure what to think of NIU winning. The NIU QB is a transfer from Michigan State, the same guy who beat Michigan last year. Regardless, the MAC officially has an upset and it is nearly the last team I would pick to do it.
Next week opponent is South Alabama. They were down 7-0 and won 31-7 so you can tell how that one went. QB was efficient and defense got a pick 6.

Looking ahead to week 2.
Tennessee hosts Pitt. Pitt is always well coached so there's no shame in losing to them - ask the 2016 national champs Clemson or the 2017 #2 Miami. It will be interesting to see how Tennessee does, both sides of the ball.
Murray State
Goes to Cincinnati. Murray State is ranked 17 in FCS.
Minnesota
Hosts Miami. Minnesota has two MAC non confs. Definitely keep an eye because this game is two opponents. Minnesota ran the ball well against Ohio State while Miami got toasted on the ground and through the air for what it is worth.
Kent State
Hosts VMI. VMI made FCS playoffs in spring. That's a major jump from years past.
Akron
Hosts Temple who got utterly shellacked by Rutgers. Former NIU coach Rod Carey is the head coach at Temple.
NIU
Hosts Wyoming. After upsetting GT, NIU is underdog at home to Wyoming. Interesting.
EMU
At Wisconsin. EMU has upset Big Ten teams in recent years. Not holding my breath on this one.
Buffalo
Goes to Nebraska. Its Nebraska so an upset is a possibility because that program seems to be a mess.
UT
Goes to Notre Dame. Notre Dame survived OT against FSU.
Miami
Goes to Minnesota.
Ohio
Hosts Duquesne. They played a good spring in FCS.

Tennessee
Lost a close one to Pitt. Scored 34 in the loss (38 on us) and QB Milton got injured.
Murray State
Lost to Cincinnati. Game was a blowout, but was 7-7 at halftime with Murray State holding Cincinnati to <100 total yards.
Minnesota
Beat Miami in a close one. Minnesota's top back was injured for the season previously and this was the first game without him. Miami outyarded Minnesota.
Kent State
Blowout win over VMI.
Akron
Loss to Temple. Akron was up 14-0 and lost 45-24.
NIU
Lost to Wyoming in a shootout. NIU significantly outgained Wyoming but threw 3 interceptions.
EMU
Lost to Wisconsin and did not hit 100 total yards of offense.
Buffalo
Lost to Nebraska.
UT
Woulda coulda shoulda beat Notre Dame and ripped the hearts out of all their coaches, players, and fans. This one will hurt. Golden opportunity slipped away.
Miami
Lost to Minnesota.
Ohio
Upset by Duquesne. Very even low offense game that came down to a 2 point attempt by Ohio.
Up next ...
Tennessee
Hosts Tennessee Tech.
South Alabama
Hosts Alcorn State.
Minnesota
Goes to Colorado.
Kent State
Goes to Iowa.
Akron
Hosts Bryant.
NIU
Goes to Michigan.
EMU
Goes to UMass.
Buffalo
Hosts Coastal Carolina.
UT
Hosts Colorado State.
Miami
Hosts Long Island University. I was unaware until writing that sentence that such a university existed and has a football team.
Ohio
Hosts Louisiana on Thursday.
Just an end note - this looks like it could be a brutal week for the MAC. The other teams are WMU at Pitt, Ball State at Wyoming, and CMU at LSU. It's not out of the realm of possible that the MAC wins 3 or fewer and that includes 3 FCS and UMass.

OU is now 0-3 and has looked about as bad as anyone in the conference. Tough situation for Albin. I'll be shocked if he doesn't step aside after the season so they can go out and find a new coach. They're really suffering from a lack of a passing game.

Unreal that they signed him to a 4-year deal before the season instead of giving him the interim tag. Looking like an awful decision right now.

Long Island has had division 1 basketball for a long time but is new to division 1 football and hockey after merging two campuses together. If you mainly follow football you wouldn't know about them and they shouldn't be that good even for fcs standards

Miami beat LIU handily
Akron beat Bryant
EMU took care of a bad UMass team
NIU should have never left the bus in Ann Arbor
Buffalo lost a close one at home to a good ranked Chants team
Minnesota goose egged Colorado
Kent got worn down by Iowa
Tennessee beat Tennessee Tech
Toledo lost at home to a bad Colorado State team

South Alabama beat Alcorn State 28-21. I think Alcorn State canceled their spring football too. So prior to a couple weeks ago, they haven't played since 2019.

Up next ...
Tennessee
At Florida, who nearly upset Alabama.
South Alabama
Bye week
Murray State
Bye week
Kent State
Goes to Maryland, completing a brutal non conf schedule.
Akron
Goes to Ohio State. Point spread note - Ohio State had covered spread against non conf opponents for I'm not even sure how many consecutive games until last week vs Tulsa. Tulsa beat the spread by a few points. This time the spread is 49.
NIU
Hosts Maine.
EMU
Hosts Texas State.
Buffalo
Goes to Old Dominion.
UT
Starts conference schedule at defending champ Ball State.
Miami
Goes to Army.
Ohio
At Northwestern.

I hit Ohio State at -48. Akron got decimated by Auburn and the Buckeyes have more firepower than the Tigers. Interesting to note that Toledo is a road favorite in Muncie despite their terrible performance last week against Colorado State. Everything else I'm not touching with a 20-foot pole.

Tennessee was beaten down by Florida.
Kent State put up something of a fight against Maryland including passing for 300.
Akron started up 7-0 at Ohio State. I hope they took a picture of the scoreboard because the final was 59-7.
NIU beat up on Maine.
EMU demolished Texas State. EMU is 3-1, but the three are Texas State, UMass, and an FCS.
Buffalo held on against Old Dominion.
UT starts 1-0 with a win over Ball State.
Miami was beaten by Army.
Ohio was blasted by Northwestern.
Up next as everyone is in or already started conference play ...
Tennessee
At Missouri.
South Alabama
Hosts Louisiana, who utterly destroyed Ohio a bit ago
Murray State
Hosts EIU
Akron
Hosts Ohio. No idea what to think.
NIU
Hosts EMU.
EMU
At NIU.
Buffalo
Hosts WMU. Might be the first of two games for these two.
UT
At UMass.
Miami
Hosts CMU.
Ohio
At Akron
Current conference standings:
UT 1-0
Ball State 0-1
Everyone else 0-0
