Raise your hand if you thought this was a 2 class rebuild in 2019

Post by Antimob »

Two things cannot be simultaneously true:

1. Mike Jinks was severely in over his head as a D1 coach and left the program in ruinous condition from a talent, discipline, culture, academic and retention standpoint. Only an insane person would think two full recruiting cycles (his initial class was 3 weeks after getting the job) would be enough to return the program to a winning season.

2. Mike Jinks was an excellent coach and program builder who had the team on the cusp of greatness, or at the very least enough to field winning seasons. Two full recruiting cycles is plenty of time.

It's basic logic. Last night was painful but the principles of turning losing football into winning don't change because we want to throw tantrums. Someone cited MSU and NIU as examples of quicker turnarounds. Their coaches were Mark Dantonio and Rod Carey, who was coming off a MAC Championship at NIU. Can anyone say with a straight face that the situations were comparable? And someone needs to tell the Florida fans all the love McElwain is oddly getting around here, another completely non-comparable example from what was inherited.

Want progress? So do I. It's never fast enough. But he has as many wins vs. Toledo as Clawson, Babers and Jinks combined. We beat a winning Big 10 team and a program that played in the MAC Championship game last year. There's enough to have faith that a reasonable, realistic rebuilding timeline is being adhered to.

Cue the inevitable responses that are as boring and predictable as any offenses they say Loeffler has had in 3, 2, 1....

These numerous threads about the same topic are getting exhausting. I can see why a lot of consistent posters have left over the past couple years.

All I'll say is knowing first hand about shenanigans going on during the Jinks tenure, the program is in a much better place foundationally even if the on the field results don't reflect that at the moment.

Antimob...you defended Jinks right up to the bitter end.

He was terrible...possibly the worst coach to ever work here. But,,,in YEAR THREE of the next coach's tenure we should be performing at a higher level than we do now. Did last night look better than the Jinks years to you?

Yes. Loeffler has more or less stabilized the roster and made the program look like a program should look like off the field. Now he needs to translate that to wins. Year 4 is where we need to see results which means the offseason is crucial.

We've been trucked by bottom tier MAC teams...I don't see much difference in the Loeffler losses and the Jinks losses. And we'll see how stable the roster is after the season...

The Loeffler losses look better than the Jinks losses because Loeffler lowered the standard. Actually Jinks was much more competitive score wise. His offenses could actually score in garbage time.

Do you want me to post YouTube clips of all of the 2020 ass kickings? Or Kansas St in 2019?

No need. I saw the Kansas State game in person.

We aren't getting our asses kicked like that any more.

UT and EMU beg to differ...and besides...getting the football version of a wedgie instead of an atomic wedgie is now the standard for success?

No one is arguing that Bowling Green has arrived. But the trend is in the right direction. This team has won three games and been in several others. It is closer to competitive than it was before this season.

The trend needs to continue.

I really don't see the logic there...this team has played some awful football in the past few weeks. They were better before that...I don't see how that trendline is a good thing

Great the 2021 team is playing better than the 2020 version. The 2020 version was by far the worst the school has ever seen. That’s like saying a person who improves from 105 to a 95, is the next Tiger Woods.

2020: 5 / 5 MAC games are brutal blowouts.
2021: 2 / 6 MAC games, 2 / 7 against peer level programs are brutal blowouts. Plus a win over a major.

Progress. It still stinks and I desperately wish it were 0 / 7 brutal blowouts.
