Urbie fired by the Jags

Re: Urbie fired by the Jags
I've no doubt he was self-sabotaging once he realized the NFL wasn't for him. Taking that job was the dumbest decision ever.
The longer the walk, the farther you crawl.
Re: Urbie fired by the Jags
I’ll never understand why he took the Jags job, of all jobs. I understand he wanted to be in the NFL, but maybe wait until a job with a better organization comes open? Complete arrogance on his part to think he could build a crappy NFL franchise into a winner from scratch with no experience. Combine that with the fact that he treated everyone awfully down there, and it was clear he had no chance.jpfalcon09 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 16, 2021 7:39 am I've no doubt he was self-sabotaging once he realized the NFL wasn't for him. I suspect today will be filled with humorous memes about his failure. I would....however...take him back here on the "back to my roots redemption tour" in a nanosecond

Re: Urbie fired by the Jags
I probably would as well. Hopefully, this experience has humbled him a bit. That's what I would be asking about during the job interview.
As badly as this ended for him in Jacksonville, I could imagine a number of FBS programs being interested in hiring him if he ever wants to go back to coaching.
Re: Urbie fired by the Jags
I'd take him back solely because of the crapfest the program has devolved into, but stuff like kicking the kicker isn't exactly out of character to how he acted 20 years ago here. I have zero desire to bring that sort of ancient coaching mindset back to campus. I also don't think Urban's Xs & Os coaching have evolved; what was once cutting edge offensive philosophy had become way behind the times in his waning years at OSU.
Still, he would bring instant credibility and would be a much better coach than anything we've had around here for awhile. Of course there is no way in hell he's coming back to us at our coaching pay schedule.

The following people would like to thank Urban Meyer for taking the Jacksonville job and bombing: Billy Napier, Brian Kelly, Brett Venables, Lincoln Riley, and Marcus Freeman.

Call me soft, but I'd pass on Urbie. I think a lot of players at all levels would view him as a joke now, parents wouldn't trust him like they have in the past, and they way he spoke down to the coaches that *HE HIRED* is pretty terrible and shows that he clearly can't take blame himself, anymore.

Re: Urbie fired by the Jags
I have no issues with this take at all. Only reason I'd welcome him back (and I'd be doing it while plugging my nose) is the state of where we're at right now.BillyLP wrote: ↑Thu Dec 16, 2021 3:42 pm Call me soft, but I'd pass on Urbie. I think he's cooked, and don't think he'll coach again, but money obviously changes things...

Yep...all those things about Urban would be true. But...how credible is Loeffler right now?

Re: Urbie fired by the Jags
Ask me in a year. I think he and the staff still have the rebuilding sell down pretty well. I agree that it has gone on a year too long, but there has been a clear adjustment in roster building for this upcoming year. With the very clear improvement from last year, he hasn't lost all credibility with me yet.

Read that Urbie...despite doing a "deep dive" into the NFL to educate himself about the league did not know who Aaron Donald was when they played the Rams.
what a fricking joke of a hire
