Former coach notes

Post by MarkL »

Two notes on former coaches.
First, as posted elsewhere, Gregg Brandon has retired. He was the football coach for all 5 of my years as a student. He had some issues regarding off field player discipline and academics. On the field, he always had a good product. His worst season (4-8) was the same record as Jinks' best season and so far Loeffler's. He earned national rankings, won or tied for the divison three times in six years, and knocked off big teams with consistency. I know I am a minority in this opinion on the board, but I have always respected Gregg Brandon and I'm truly glad he got to finish his career in his home state. Congratulations on a great career and enjoy time off with the family!
Second, Mike Jinks is now RB coach at Houston. I hope he does well there. Obviously his time here was abysmal and set the program back miles behind what he found and it will still be a long road to recovery. He was at USC for three years and unfortunately for him did little to repair his image as a coach. The RBs were consistently considered the weak point of the offense and as a recruiter I haven't heard that he was tearing it up. Now he is back in his home state. Hopefully for his sake being back in familiar territory he can recruit well and maybe sometime get a shot at OC or maybe another shot at HC. Just not here.

Perry Eliano is the new safeties coach at Ohio State. He was the DC under Jinks, regrettably.

Definitely a bad DC hire at the time. I remember being able to hear him scream in the press box.

But he went on to be pretty successful coaching DBs at Cincinnati, having a first team all-American this year as well as the Thorpe Award winner.

Good position coach. Horrible coordinator. That was the problem with the Jinks staff - all vertical moves. The OCs were formerly a div 3 OC and a position coach. The DC was formerly a position coach. Several position coaches were formerly grad assistants. No horizontal moves.
Any given vertical move would be fine and you definitely get some of those with a new staff. But all vertical moves, led by a guy with only three years in the college ranks and never higher than a position coach? That was never going to work.
The critical early mistake for Jinks was he did not hire a coordinator from Ohio with former head coach experience to give proper advice, at least not until year three when he was already pretty much done.

Just saw tweet that Houston expected to hire Jinks as RB Coach as their RB Coach headed to Ole Miss.

Now see if anyone hires Seth Doege in some capacity.

In a fit of pique after the Michigan loss, Ryan Day has broomed a number of position coaches out at Ohio State...risky move since a lot of recruiting is typically done by assistants.

Wow.

If true, this could be an opportunity for Greg Studwara to come back home.

If he takes that 1990's offense with him...I'm good with that

I don't know Terry Malone but it's possible no one has more experience coaching football at Bowling Green. He was here for most of the Moe Ankney and Gary Blackney eras. He's seen a lot over the years.

On twitter, Coach Malone has been "liking" a LOT of tweets about LSU football and sports over the last week or two, and there isn't a history of that prior. Don't know if there are any openings there, but could be a sign of a move on his part.

He commented on the Bayer hiring, so who knows. I figured he and Loeffler were attached at the hip, but if Scot was the one calling plays this past year then I can see why Terry could be headed elsewhere.

The rumor includes taking a consulting type position at LSU.

WTOL’s Jordan Strack is reporting that Terry Malone is indeed going to LSU as an offensive analyst.
