First, I'm all in on Coach Loeffler for this season, and while a HUGE stretch, it is interesting!

There are going to be a lot of people that would absolutely hate this, based on his personality and history of controversy, and that’s totally understandable.
But man… I can’t tell you how excited I would be about it. I can’t even help it - this would be a wildly exciting move for the program, even though it’s very unlikely.

Baseless speculation on a podcast that gets reported as news. No way Urban's ego ever brings him back here.

It's fun to think about. But the chances of this seem extremely low.

Who's going to mop up the trail of slime he'll leave when he moves on?
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: Urban's Bowling Green Redemption
Anybody who knows me, knows I have a TREMENDOUS respect for Urban Meyer the coach. He was, for a solid 15 or so year stretch, one of the best college football coaches I've ever seen. When he was at BG, even though he was raw, I think we genuinely had a top 5 or so coach in the country. At the time he was doing things offensively that nobody else in the country was doing.
That said I have very little interest in bringing him back for several reasons. For starters, his time at big dollar universities brought out the massive corruption in him. Given the stories about making players run til they puked, etc, it was probably always there, but I want nothing to do with the culture(s) he left behind at UF and OSU. By many accounts he essentially turned a blind eye to a damned murderer because he was a good football player.
Secondly, anybody who watched those OSU teams knows that [despite overwhelming success] the Xs & Os game has passed him by. Still a tremendous recruiter and motivator, but his offense and game calling are still stuck in the mid '00s. Now don't get me wrong, it would be a vast improvement to leave the 90s era Carr offense we seem hell bent on replicating here, but when it comes to Xs & Os I would set my sights much more current than what Meyer would bring here.
Dude was a fantastic coach. We were fortunate to have him at BG 20 years ago. There are plenty of other coaches out there we can find to do just as well here that will cost less and result in less drama/publicity. It's unfortunate that we don't even care to look and our current coaching staff is so awful we want to revive the golem corpse of Urban Meyer just to have a prayer of winning 5 games.

I think this is right, especially the bolded part. Hypothetically (for this is almost certainly hypothetical), Meyer would create amazing buzz here. Based on that buzz alone, and his proven ability to recruit, the Falcons might take it to a whole other level here, farther than Meyer was able to push the team the last time he was here. But it would come at a significant cost.hammb wrote: ↑Fri Jun 03, 2022 8:43 am For starters, his time at big dollar universities brought out the massive corruption in him. The Falcons went from no wins in 2020 to four last year. This team is improving. I'll be surprised if they don't win at least five this season, despite a challenging schedule. It's unfortunate that we don't even care to look and our current coaching staff is so awful we want to revive the golem corpse of Urban Meyer just to have a prayer of winning 5 games.
Re: Urban's Bowling Green Redemption
I seem to remember saying going into the 2021 season that if everything under the sun went right, the ceiling was 6 wins. The team won 4, and was shockingly close to 6 (South Alabama and Kent) and a few breaks from 8 (NIU and Akron). 4 games they just weren't in (Tenn, EMU, UT, Miami). So to say they did pretty well against my proposed absolute max ceiling is fair. Most folks around here were projecting 2 wins so to win 4 was an over achievement which should say something about the state of the program going into 2021.
Going into 2022, the max possible wins really depends upon the offensive line situation. I don't know anything about the line but even then I'd say the max possible wins if everything under the sun goes right has to be higher than 6 given the experience returning all over the field on both sides of the ball.
