2022 Transfer Portal

Well folks, we’ve reached that time of year again.

Players will leave, and we’ll also have new players come aboard, as well. Just the nature of college football now. Please keep things respectful in this thread - these are just kids doing what they think they need to do in order to put themselves in a good position.

TE Javonte Kinsey has entered the transfer portal with 3 years of eligibility left. Best of luck to the young man.

Mack Brown said today he expects a record number of kids in the portal when it officially opens next Monday. Expectation is schools with changes in head coaches may see a mass exodus.

Man… I hate this.

I’m all for guys being able to put themselves in a position where they feel like they can succeed. I feel like that needs to be said. Players should have the same rights to movement as coaches or any other college student.

But I feel like a ton of these players have warped senses of reality, or receive bad advice. If you can’t play at a place like BG, you probably aren’t getting on the field at an equal or better school, so why transfer there instead of fighting your way into the field at your first choice program? I know that not every transfer leaves for playing time, but that feels like it’s often the case. It’s especially maddening when it’s a guy who comes here for one year and then leaves. Are you really upset that you didn’t play as a freshman? That should never be your expectation when you commit to a program - especially at this level. Also, I really wish guys would commit to a school rather than a coach. There’s been too much of the other option recently, and it’s heavily contributing to this situation.

It also really sucks as a fan, too, because you try to root for guys and form a relationship with them but that’s really confined to one year at a time now, because guys could leave at any time.

I always wish guys that leave BG the best. If you’ve been a Falcon for even a semester, you’re a Falcon for life. So when I see them leave and go into situations where it obviously won’t work out, it just makes me sad. These kids deserved better than the crap coaches are selling them to convince them to come to schools, and they deserve better advice for what they should do when they reach a crossroads. My hope is that once the transfer portal has been around long enough for there to be real year over year statistics about guys that leave never finding a landing spot, that info will inform the decisions these guys make.

End rant.

How much is coaches dumping marginal kids instead of trying to develop them?

I'm mixed on the issue...I think some kids do give up on a situation too soon because they think they can get more time elsewhere. I'm sure some of those kids are being told by the coaches that they aren't going to see the field because the coaches want them to leave because they think tey can find someone better.

I'm sure some kids leave because the coaches can't get their s**t together. We've had terrible offensive lines her the past few seasons. Our OL coach was given a new set of players to work with and we saw little improvement. Why would an OL want to come here? Why would a QB come here? Multiple guys who were recruited to play QB here have left because we stuck with the same guy. Why would you go someplace like Akron where they do nothing but lose and the campus is in...Akron.

It does make changing coaches a lot easier. It used to be a dicey proposition that first year because the previous staff recruited a class and the incoming coach had to work to keep them and then look to the following season to really start recruiting. Now...you can cut a coach loose and make a hire based on the incoming coach's connections to bring in players. A strong recruiter form a successful P5 program might be a more attractive candidate than a successful HC from FCS or lower because he might have better access to talent

Not everyone in the portal is a soft impatient kid. Some have the talent and get passed by (for some reason people think the coaches are right about every personell choice, even though in next breath they deserve to be canned? ). Many are driven out by the coaches, for any number of reasons. Some aren’t good enough for this level. Some are better than this level. Some are destined to be academically ineligible. Some want to win, and don’t see it here. This statement applies to every team, not just BG. We love getting portal transfers IN, but everyone that leaves is good riddance?

It's no different than free agency. Club may have reasons to move on from a player, player may have reasons to move on from the club. Should be no hard feelings. Just hope it works out for both parties.

Agree. This portal now makes coaches more expendable. Where a “good” coach had connections (in the 4 hour radius) now doesn’t mean Sh::t. Most teams at our level have few if any noteworthy HS recruits on board. BG certainly has no one. Funny how meaningless the 247 rankling of recruiting classes has become (if they even do it? I haven’t looked! ). I wonder what happens (soon) when no one knows the transferring players because they didn’t recruit anyone from HS?

Offer in for Monmouth QB Tony Muskett. 64 completion %, over 5,000 yards passing, 51 TDs to 14 INTs in his career.

Sad to see Kinsey go; thought he showed upside potential especially with the move to TE this year. Had a great TD catch at Miami and some highlight real stuff in fall camp. Really wanted him to succeed as he grew up near where I live and went to the same elementary school my two sons currently attend.

Hope this doesn’t mean we lose Embry as well as the two were high school teammates. Noticed during the season Embry’s time on the field diminished.

I think with Fannin showing that he is a potential All-MAC guy by next season, Kinsey saw the writing on the wall that he would never be TE1 here. Makes sense. Would hate to lose Embry because I think he has great instincts as a returner, but he would probably get a lot more time at RB or WR at an FCS school.
